im trying to make a frag rack but im afraid the magnets i have will leach chemicals into the water any input?
thanks

I use old glass scruber magnets and super glue the rack on to them. If you don't have any lying around you can always use aquarium silicone and coat the magnets that will be in the water.

BRS has some small, very strong magnets they sell for jus these types of things and for replacements for the racks they sell... they are only like 6 bucks a pair... perhaps they could help you...

btw, they are made to be in saltwater and are coated...

If you coat them with epoxy any magnet will do if it's strong enough... I know most people use a old mag float or buy rare earth neo magnets from magnets.com or something like that iirc and use that rubber coating you can buy at home depot to coat the handles of your tools etc.... Hth

Troy, that rubber coating doesn't work too well. I had some magnets made that way for my tank, and around 10 to 12 months you'd see the magnet exploding out of a glaring crack, rusting away.

I used plastic 2 liter bottle caps with rare earth magnets i purchased from magnet4less.com. I put the magnets inside the bottle caps then I poured clear 2 part epoxy into the caps covering the magnets. It seems to work well

Fail. Always document with pictures what you do so others can learn from your ideas. ;)

I made many frag racks for myself and friends using neodymium magnets, casting resin and black eggcrate.
To coat the magnets I used casting molds normally used for drawer pulls.
have pics here.
