Do we know what is in Bayer?

there is a new dip being advertised not long ago on here (maybe last week?) that said they are just as good if not better than bayer but safe for all tank inhabitans.

I understand that, but the bottle says it's waterproof for up to an hour and I've tried more then 2 dips. They just never seem to get the job done.
I either want a solid alternative or to safe way to use Bayer. I hope one of the 2 is feasible in the near future.

I'll chime in a bit here. I am a long time middle Tennessee member and I was one of the ones with a complete devastation of my sps. I started losing my sps in October 2013 and by may 2014 they were all but gone. Just a few remnants. I tore down my 180 in July 2014 completely dis-heartened of the loss of my corals.

Some back story. The 180 I had was doing well with some large colonies. I discovered aefw in my tank and declared war. I Bayer dipped at 2ml per gallon. Mush weaker than many now dip. Since I had massive encrusted colonies I dipped entire rocks in ice chests full of dip. I rinsed well but still lost all pods and shrimp after 3 dip cycles in my dt. But my tank recovered. And it recovered extremely well with incredible growth (inch per month) in most cases. I had beat the worm. Then something odd happened. Stn. From the base up mostly. I couldn't stop it. I lost every single acropora, Stylopora, millepora, pocillipora. You name it sps wise, I lost it. Never knew why but I suspect it was something I didn't dip for. I don't blame the Bayer because it had been 9 months to a year since the massive dip. I don't suspect aefw as there was no evidence in some smaller dips I did. I ran uv. I had carbon. I used ecobak. I had a great skimmer and good lights. LPS flourished. Fish flourished. Zoanthids spread like wildfire. But sps would never take hold again.

I dismantled my tank and moved 1/3 of the nicest rocks and all remain coral into my 66 gallon tank I have now. The anemones moved over too and I don't think I lost any coral in that move. I didn't move a single sps. In a year and a half, I have added just one single acropora. It never encrusted and ended up slowly dieing. Yet my LPS have doubled or more in thst time. My clam has grown, my anemones have tripled.

I firmly believe I had something in my tank that I didn't test for. No clue what. All of my params were well within acceptable ranges. Good water, good lights.

I have simplified my reef a lot now and love where it is. But I don't grow sps. I have some small pieces of montipora now and it has done ok. But nothing super spectacular.

I've had big problems with AEFW and had to tear down my tank a few months ago and documented this painful time on this forum.

Bayer was always my dip of choice and I managed to save all my Acropora sp. or at least save frags of them. I can honestly say I have now dipped hundreds of times and never seen the ill-effects mentioned in this thread.

I have noticed an ingredient in the Bayer version available in the USA that we do not have here in Australia and that is; beta-Cyfluthrin.
The dip I use only has imidacloprid as an active ingredient.

That being said, I always dip first, then rinse all frags/colonies in clean tank water.

I rarely bring in new corals, and when I have, I try to get them from places I trust (like friends, Diver's Den, etc.) so I haven't ever dipped a coral. I also do not presently have SPS.

wow! never dipped a coral!? lol

well, I was hoping for some insight from an "authority" type person. We have been having a debate, here locally, about the possible short and long ter, side effects of using bayer. And possible hidden/undisclosed ingredients, potentially causing harm or having a negative impact.

Yes, both will bind to GAC and probably be skimmable as well. Whether those take it up fast enough relative to organism exposures, I couldn't say.

Would it do any good to add a tsp of carbon to a 1/2 gallon of rinse water with a small powerhead for the second rinse? Soak for an hour?

Personally, I clip off any rock/plugs, then Bayer dip, 1st dip swish, then 2nd dip soak for an hour, and then put the corals into a QT for a week. I have a separate QT for fish. The Acro QT is very simple - it's just a bare-bottom 15-gallon tank with 2x24w T5 and a hang-on power filter. Because of this thread, I'm going to add carbon to the power filter. :)

Hmm, I believe that is the active ingredient in Advantage for dogs, topical flea product. Perhaps, we could use that as a dip? I don't think it has the other...

Guys forget bayer, just dip them in h2o2!

I saved my nearly dead percula from ich once with this! Forget copper too.

All microbiolgists will tell you to kill parasites with hydrogen peroxide.

Not sure how sps would react to it though. But after a half hour all h202 will be gone in the tank water.

Im talking 5ml of 3% h202 in 200ml of tank water. Not pure.

Actually i was thinkkng of trying it on a frag that has some hair algae growing on its base. It will kill the hair algae.

That would probably help get it out of the water for sure. Problem is that Bayer advanced is made to stick to surfaces and be water proof. The absolute best way to dip with Bayer is to only dip coral and not plugs or rocks. That's a real PITA and not always feasible though.
