Do you clean your back glass?

As the title and poll suggests, I’m on the fence and could go either way.

At the moment, I like the idea of staying with the clean as possible look, but I do also like the look of the purple Caroline algae covered backs. Bonus would be less maintenance.

How long does it usually take for the back to turn purple if left alone?

Nope, I leave back glass alone. I like the coralline algae, and even standard microalgaes are fine with me on the back glass for CuC and herbivore grazing. I've had my display running for about 2 years now and the back is about 60% covered, but I also don't actively try to encourage the coralline growth with supplements or anything.

Currently with my lights not being turned on, I like the stark contrast of the black background against the Marco rock structure, but I think when I turn my lights on in a month or so and start adding corals, then I might lean more towards the algae look.

I would never scrape Caroline algae off I pray for it every day

Green algae is a different animal. I have a cleaner that is a long rod with a razor blade attached My Tang loves following me around and eating the algae as it comes off

What if I told you that algae will eventually turn into coraline?

No I just let it go and snails keep algae to a minimum.

Well for instance in my tank some zoas are growing on the back wall and the big green acro has encrusted a big portion of the wall. Even the big rock nem attached to the back wall. Corals such as cyphastrea or porites can encrust on the back wall and of course GSP. They make some cool magnetic rock formations also that you can attach to your back wall and add corals to also.

I couldn’t decide, so I glued GSP to the back wall a week ago. It's still too early, but so far, I like it.

Mine turns green, bubbly and hairy before it turns purple.
