My wife and kids name some of the fish with characters, we have a tasseled file fish called Gordon, a Molly Miller blenny called nosey. The only fish I have ever named was a PBT it was called Psycho and it acted like one

I had a rule against it because they die too often and didn't want my kids to get too attached and heartbroken. My kids are getting older so I may change the policy. Letting them and my wife come up with names is a way to engage them in what is otherwise my hobby so we can enjoy it together. (For some reason they don't share my interest in PVC cement, buckets, or alkalinity levels).

That said, they have zero creativity in naming fish. Flame angel was Flamey. Foxface rabbitfish was Foxy. Clownfish pair were called Big Clowny and Little Clowny. If I ever replaced a fish with the same species they just recycle the name, so I guess it's personalizing the common species name rather than naming individual fish.

We’ve named almost everything in the tank. The fish, shrimp, clam, some of the corals. Maybe it’s because we have a 5 year old or maybe that’s just our excuse, but they are living creatures that we rest as pets, so they get names!
Fire Shrimp: John MacLaine and Hans Gruber
Maxima: Jean Claude Van Clam
Watch man Pistol Pair: Bert and Ernie
Bubble Coral: Bubble Gump
So on and so on

I have one wife and 4 daughters that absolutely name the fish and cleaner shrimp. It's almost automatic for them to do so :)

Yes - I think I posted this somewhere before, but I have some very “original” names for my fish:
1. Female clown- “ginger” (was named when we got her- thought about naming her Nicole since boy is OJ)
2. Male clown- “OJ” (was names when we got him”
3. Juvenile clown- “Nemo” (I know)
4. Hippo tang - “Dorry” (I know)
5. Female ruby red dragonette- “ruby”
6. Male ruby red dragonette - “red”
7. Yellowed eye kole tang “kole”
8. Scopus tang - “oranga” (as in orangoutang”)
9. Lawn mower blenny “Steve”
10. Pink Smith Damsel Fish- “Lady” (cuz she’s a model citizen)
11. Lubbock Fairy wrass - only fish without a name? Need suggestions lol
12. 6x green cromis- they are all named but wife only knows all of the names lol. I know one is Stan and one is Frank. Don’t remember the rest lol
13. pajama cardinal- “pot head” (because of the red eyes”
14. Coral beauty- “Beauty”

Mine only get numbers. Though percula pair #4 should be named Dumb & Dumber since they haven't gotten one single spawn right - the eggs are always scattered loosely over the substrate and never viable. If they had not really nice onyx coloration I would ditch them...
