I never name them. As odd as it sounds, even after owning fish for 20 years, any time I have named a fish i have lost them soon after. Needless to say after a few times I learned my lesson and never named one since.

My wife name my Clownfish "Munchie", because when we got him he went on a 9 day hunger strike and we didnt think he would make it. We like irony, so the name seemed to fit.

All of my fish have names and I prefer to have my 6 year old choose because he comes up with the best names. We just bought a fire fish several weeks ago and he named it Starfire. Our cleaner shrimp is Bacon because the body reminds him of bacon.

We were trying to think of names for our Purple Fire Fish (now known as Violet) and our YWG and it got me to thinking if people name their fish?

Frankly I really don't know, I always just assumed they were like dogs or cats, you name them. So what do you guys do?
My maroon clown is named BingBing and my longspine urchin is Spike.

Kids named the clowns:
Wyoming white clown - Winter
Mocha occelaris - Mocha 2
Wife and I named these guys:
Purple tang - Wu Tang Forever
Skunk shrimp: Chop & Sticks (bigger one is sticks)
Purple pincushion urchin - Urchibald (Urchy for short)
We have one lonely purple heart zoanthid right now i jokingly call - Zoe Des-a-shell

I think we will keep naming, its really fun for us. Also i read in the fish keepers handbook its OK to recycle names if any fish dies and is replaced. Its up to you if you add a number (Mocha 2.....) :p

I gave up on naming my fish a while back. Now I simply call them by what they are. If I had to though, I would likely go based on their personality traits (ie Foxface would be called Spaz).

I just remembered a name someone else had for a convict tang that still makes me chuckle randomly and get the “what’s wrong with you?!” Look from my lady....

“Butt badger bob”. You can probably guess why...lol
