Hi all,
Here is our progression building our tank. It was a lot of work but we love it so far.
We wanted tp put the tank somewhere we could always see it. We had great spaces in halls and in the dining room but we are hardly ever there. So we had to get creative.
We didnt need this bookshelf and we hardly use the fireplace here in NC. That was no measly bookcase, it was built out of 2x6's.
Demo
Framing and drywall
Finishing touches
Now.... Our tank is 48x24x24. That hole is 54 inches wide. I had to get creative to get the tank in the hole. I had an idea after a day of thinking about it that we could put the stand on a platform, then put the tank on the stand, and then finally slide the stand into the hole. This idea worked perfectly and took only two people.
Went right in easy peasy.
This is what our dining room looked like for 6 weeks while we waited for the tank.
Redesigned the sump for a bigger fuge and ATO.
Plumbing!
Pre UV
Post UV, all I had to do was couple onto existing couplings, nothing dramatic.
The final product!
We had some trouble with the first pair of clowns, one stopped eating and got all pale with stringy poo. I put them both in a QT with Metro. The one died but the other survives. While those two are in QT, I have two skunk shrimp and a Zoa in the tank. I wanted some bioload in there to keep cycling. It seems to be trucking along as I have seen Ammonia, Nitrite, and now Nitrate. We are taking a break on spending in Sept but plan to put in tons of corals in Oct. I will also be working on phyto culturing and DIY dosing projects. The last big project is the hood that I plan to mount on a linear actuator to raise it up 12 inches (all the room I have), and finish all the ventilation (about a month too late. Im having to blow a fan with sump door open right now.... But sometimes you just cant have it all right away.
Heres where we stand as of today. The two shrimp love the mysis and coral frenzy, that zoa (bubblepop or purple heart) is looking good two. It opened up the night we brought it home and has been soaking up the blues since then.
Looking forward to hearing anyone's comments or advice!
Thanks,
