Don't get me wrong, I do like zoas. I like the variety of colors and sizes they come in, but it seems like they are the common coral for people to get. Not to mention, they can be finicky at times, are priced high depending on the colony, and can be pesky with space. So I am wondering, do you think they are overrated corals and overhyped, or do you think everyone should have some in their tanks?

I love zoas. They are so diverse in appearance. If I see a tank with a nice zoa garden, my eyes and attention are always drawn there. Plus, they are usually hardy and can be great for a young tank.

I have 2 mixed tanks with some zoa's and love them but they are just part of the mix. Not sure why some people obsess about certain types and pay ridiculous prices for some that are "rare" or just super hyped. I do try to keep them to specific rocks so they don't spread too mush. I also like mushrooms for the same reason

I've always liked zoanthids since seeing them in a store back in the late 80's. They were pretty bland back then with only hints of real color.
Then in the 90's and the internet came around with pictures of these exotic colors ( eagle eyes, tubbs blues, etc), man I just couldn't get enough. You could get whole colonies ( 50-100 polyps) for what is being charged for a polyp now.
Then after ( when I noticed) a famous auction for some PPE's the prices for nice colors really started to skyrocket.
Now, with the prices what they are they haven't been as important to me.

I like certain ones for sure. I like ones with slight variations between polyps (such as salted agave)

I don't think they are overrated in a vacuum, I think they're super cool, vibrant, and relatively easy to keep. Now on the flip side, the way some vendors price them can make them overrated/not worth it. Generally, every zoa grows and reproduces at the same rate. What justifies charging 30-40-50 dollars per polyp???

I used to. Now I love them and have several colonies in my tank and they're easily the most eye catching coral in the tank.....for now 😈
