Does anyone live in an HOA community?

LOL! What is with all this business of recommending the sticks? Not exactly the direction I want to go in.

Lol just getting my point across,and I know not all can be bad. But after my experience I'd rather be on the next rocket to Mars than pay another group to regulate me. I'm sure some communities can make it work. And not trying to scare anyone but I wish you luck with yours. Also keep in mind that they have more legal power than most realize.[emoji61]

My HOA is about $50/mo and you get access to all seven pools, intermittent snow removal and a lot of old people who self report HOA violations. Do I like what they stand for? Yes. Are the rules enforced? Not unless someone self reports- which means it's easy to retaliate if you suspect you're being targeted. and yes there are some real butt heads out there... But I just let my sprinkler hit the sidewalk when they're out walking

It's seems like you're good on burning leaves and such, just don't set the car motor hanging out in your yard on fire. :p

Lived in 2. The first one was part of a townhouse complex. The fees just went to $150 when we sold. That covered yard work and snow removal. There were a couple other things, but those were the main ones. It was pretty forgiving -- was allowed to change up the landscaping as long it still looked nice (( open to interpretation )) and didn't interfere with the landscapers.

The new one is for our house, about $200 per year. As of right now it is still builder controlled, still have about 200 houses to build, so it will be a while. Not even sure what the rules are, currently. It was about one page -- sure that will change when it gets turned over.

So... Neighbors kept leaving shopping carts infront of our house. We called the city and they took them. Then they pushed a car infront to replace where the shopping carts were. Car sat about 6 weeks. We called code enforcement and now they have pushed it infront of the mailbox. Well played.. If I was bold enough I should push it back into the tow lines. But I have them on camera I'll just keep calling.

My parents live in a gated community with a pretty powerful HOA + full time security. They are currently submitting plans to do a total remodel to their house and the HOA is being beyond difficult haha. They have approved permits from the city and costal but the HOA is hammering them on arguments over inches. I feel bad for them. It is totally ridiculous and costs money every time they are forced to draft another plan. It is a very nice neighborhood though just too many old rich people on the board.

My mom lives with an HOA. They're awful! Her dues are over $1000 a MONTH. They just redid everyone's roof and siding and hit everyone with a $10,000 special assessment. Payable over a year.

We are having some hardscaping done and the labor is $40,000. The contractor is asking for a 37.5% payment to start. I'm reading that homeowners should not pay more than 10% per California Codes. Does anyone know if that applies to common grounds in a gated HOA?

My HOA is not as active either, now they are starting to enforce though and been installing ridiculous speed bumps that I've made them shave off 3 times to prevent damage to my car. I agree that they help with the home value and keep the neighborhood clean but there are some ridiculous ones out there.

I can't deny that I love the gate. LOVE the gate. Los Angeles is a busy, crowded nasty city and it's nice to be able to duck into an area the rest of the world can't follow.

The day I moved into my current home one busy body neighbor showed up, not to say welcome, but to let me know the HOA rules explicitly state only 2 dogs per lot ( I had 3). Burnt her butt when I told her we bought the vacant lot next door and one of the dogs lives there , LOL. I thought , oh no, I was afraid moving into a HOA hood was going to be trouble, but fortunately that one neighbor was the only squeaky wheel and she has moved.
