The best setup I ever had was a Sump with a Trickle Plate. Put a Flat Piece of Thin Filter Material on the Plate. When it overflows the lip, from being clogged, I’d wait 24 hours, for the Amphipods and Copepods to escape, spray off in the laundry sink, and reinstall.

I second that style. Bought one from a LFS years ago, basically was like a wet dry but it had 3 chambers for the drain, skimmer & return. Drain chamber had a tray for filtration.

@Lbrdsoxfan what are you sailing in your picture there?
That was my 1982 '30 Catalina. Loved that boat, I sold it almost 2 years ago, had it for over a decade. I'm still paying for the slip (subleasing), so I'm looking at a 32-35 footer cruiser or sailboat. Dunno what yet, lol.

question, if the floss doesnt cover the slits in the cup, wont everything bypass when the floss starts to clog?

for sam, can you make a tray to cover 3 socks?
The floss size is completely up to whoever installs it. I include templates for cutting floss with the intent of having filter fiber between the two pads. I just didn't have the fiber when I sent the prototypes, just the floss but I didn't want that to delay anything.
I'll post some diagrams or gifs once I get the 4" sock printed, tested and posted.

Depending on size & complexity, I may choose to mill out of acrylic rather then print it.
Or, if you want a fast & cheap alternative to acrylic, I could mill it out of extruded PVC paneling (which I use extensively in my build).

Correct. I put in a smaller piece of floss to show everyone the holes. Already put in a larger piece to cover up the holes.

Is there one for AIO 20gal Innovation Marine
I have this tank and ditched the filter sock on day 1. I use a media basket and put a cut square of the blue/white filter floss at the top. On a tank that small - I think my solution is even easier. I buy a bag of it on amazon and I think the whole bag is like $11, and it lasts for like 1/2 a year. Every three days I just pull it out with my fingertips, toss it in the trash, cut a new little square, and stuff it in. Takes maybe 30 seconds. Check out my build thread if you want to see it.

It’s amazing how long the filter floss lasts!

I tried the cups and went back to socks. Easier to wash/clean up and I merely switch out with spares.
The cups were noisy and changing media and foam pads were time consuming for me. I have a Bashsea sump with triple sock holders, making socks easier versus standard sumps

Why do triple sock holders make things easier?

Poly-Fil in my cups you can buy a metric ton for $25.00 and throw it away every time. So Easy, I will never ever ever....Did I say Never, deal with cleaning socks again.
850 gallon reef, still on my first box of poly-fill after two years, I think it will last 3 1/2 - 4 years on my system.

I use these

I do have this 90’ x 4’ roll that I lay on top my 18” x 24” filter tray.
this roll was $104.00. I did the math, it will last 7 years

Why do triple sock holders make things easier?
Its not the triple socks, its the use of socks - I simply switch them out and walk away. The sump has three- Not an option for less - Thats typical of Bashsea and I saw at MACNA some now have four with a slide out drawer design.
