Double photo period

Has anyone here tried a double photo period? If so what issues or differences did you notice?

There were some guys doing it several years ago that had great results. I believe 4on/4off/4on/12off was found to be the best, with the key being at least a 4 off between the on cycles to allow for the corals to repair and have some down time. I think the reason it never gained too much traction is that you end up getting half of the life out of your bulbs, due to the fact that the surge from the start current is what causes the most wear. I think it would be a very worthwhile thing to consider since that doesn't affect LEDs.
