This is one expensive acro. I have seen it advertised along with pictures on various sites, but what about it is so special? I am guessing the photos I have seen do not do it justice.

I have yet to see a single photo of this coral that makes it worth even $100 to me....Beauty is the eye of the beholder I guess.

It was kinda like the my miami story. It was one of the first,if not the first, of it sp. to be introduced to the hobby with its unusual pink/red/purple color. On top of that it had a very unusual growth pattern compared to other acroporas of that time. Since it was a 1st it was a MUST have for sps collectors. Since it is still in high demand and is relativly limited, it continues to carry a high price.

But now there are a few others that have been introduced to the hobby that carry the same characteristics...

I agreed with both of you until I saw it in person.. The pictures of a red dragon do it no justice at all. It has an almost metallic maroon look. It is very unique. I am not agreeing with the price or anything but it is a definite must for any acro collector.

Is that RR's original picture?

Does look pretty sweet there...Honestly though, there is so much of this coral being passed around and so many look alikes who knows if you are getting the real thing anymore...Seems commonplace to tag a look alike with the same name these days...

That's from RC member 250g. You'll also notice the monti on the left that RR was recently selling.

I'm not backing up the $200+ price tag but I saw that pic in '08 and loved the coral ever since. It didn't show up here until around '10

That's right! I remember him and how he would talk about RR as the holy grail of of SPS. His tank was siiick!!! He had some crazy stuff that's for sure.

Do you have a nice little chunk of it going?

I must say the growth habit is appealing and would be something I would like in my tank. But that is the first picture I saw of a colony that looked like that. All other picture just looked like a washed out pink version of hawkins echinata. When I first saw My Miami my jaw dropped because of the contrast in colors. It was a must have but after scrolling down the websites the price made me laugh. My Miami has dropped alot the last few years and hopefully be like BGM in price. I do not know how long this acro has been on the market but hopefully is soon follow suite.

"Red Dragon" acro has been around for the last few if not several years in Toronto but was unknown back then when it was first acquired as a wild colony and wasn't as red in coloration.

It was purchased by a "silent" local hard core reefer.

Good job Ian for noticing the Monti as well :) Yes 250g had a very nice tank... 90% of his SPS came from us. Its too bad though that he left the hobby but hoping he would one day return. That SPS came in brown in 2004-2005. Purchased by a fellow collector. It fell behind the rocks in his tank and when pulled out, it had the "FUCHSIA" color.... atleast that's what we called it back in the days. In some cases, this acro develops almost a red with blue tip but in some it retains the pinkish/purpleish with blue tip and white polyps.

HERE'S A COMPARISON PICS JUST BEFORE WE SOLD THE 1ST MINI COLONY

Ian... that SPS is a bit sensitive especially with Temp. and sudden change of water chemistry. We've lost so much in the past because of those reasons... but once it stabilize.. it grows rather rapidly and thrive :)

I own a frag of red dragon and although it is nice, the growth pattern different and overall rare......its not near my nicest coral IMO. Although I don't think any frag is worth what some are charging for the "red dragon".

I also got a piece of that monti.....although I didnt recognize it as the same one RR was/is selling.

I had a chance to buy a frag of this awhile back, turned it down due to the price, however after seeing some of these pictures, I might try hunting down the guy again to see if he's still selling!

may need to get the SPS tank up again :)
