I have a 150-gallon SCA tank with (3 ) 1 -inch bulkheads. 2 drains and 1 return for a Herbie style setup. Now I bought the trigger systems CR44 sump and the drain bulkheads on the sump are 1.5 inches. Is it ok to run 1-inch piping all the way down to the sump and right at the sump go from 1-inch piping to 1.5-inch piping into the sump? Will going bigger right at the sump mess up having a full siphon in any way?

You can or can use an adapter to increase pipe size reducing splash

I’d just use slip reducers on both sides of the bulkhead and keep it all 1”
so all the piping above the tank bulkhead is 1-inch and everything below is 1-inch. But my bulkheads on the sump are 1.5-inch, so is it ok using a slip reducer going from 1-inch up to 1.5-inch right at the sump right before it drains into the sump? Not sure if that will affect the full siphon.

see pic the bulkhead drain fitting is 1.5 inches but all my piping down to it is 1 inch

with the pic above I guess my only question is can I go from 1 inch to 1.5 inches right before the sump, and will doing so affect my full siphon for a Herbie style overflow?

Not sure how the 1.5” length of pipe at the bulkhead side in the sump will affect siphon. But like I said above I have mine with slip reducers on both sides of my 1.5” bulkhead and 1” pipe the whole way. Been working like a charm for 4 years now

no, you answered my question. Just was unsure if the piping getting bigger right where it drains into the sump would make a difference. so you're saying 1-inch piping all the way down to the sump, then a slip adapter into the 1.5-inch bulkhead, and then another slip adapter on the other side of the sump bulk head back to 1-inch pipe into the sump?

Yeah. That’s they way I have all mine. My trigger is reduced on both sides down to 1” and my fiji cube sump is necked down from 1” to 3/4” on both sides. Siphon works fine.

This is a great idea. I currently keep a piece of glass cut to fit over the sumps to contain splashing. Lots of salt creep to keep after because of it. This looks to be a cleaner solution.
