Hey guys,

My LFS sold me some dry rock. This is the first time I have purchased dry rock.

They told me I don't need to dip it in acid. Are there kinds of dry rock where you dont need to dip them in acid?

If not, what acid do I dip these things into?

John

I would soak it in water. Just freshwater for awhile. A trash can with water, no dipping, no heater, no flow, doesn't mater if in light or not. It will bring out the phosphates and anything else. reefdvms on youtube have a video on soaking dryrock. It's simple and very effective. I'll try to find it.

If its Macro Rock, just give it a good water rinse in a tub, then your good to go.

That is what I was told. I have 90 lbs of dry Marco rock that I am going to start cycling in a new tank.

Although, if you are adding the dry rock to an established tank, depending on how much dry rock you add, it could kick off a mini nitrogen cycle.

You can give it a short acid bath[20-30min] followed by a lot of rinsing if it makes you feel better. And It will help remove phosphate.

FWIW I used dry rock several times [BRS] and have done an acid bath on 150lbs I bought from a tank breakdown.
But from what I read often is Marco-Rock is rarely a problem. So at minimum I would give it a short 2wk saltwater cure.<also optional ,just how I do.

A 20-30 minute acid bath and you won't be left with much rock lol. Whenever I did my rock, it took around 7 minutes for the worst pieces, and even then, it lost about 15-20% of its mass (the rock I used is 'Miami oolite' from Reefcleaners). Marcorocks uses the same rock, except it is not rinsed/cleaned, and BRS stuff is a bit more macroporous and may lose even more mass.
