Dual mega flow - convert to dual herbie or single bean?

I’ve seen a few threads on this but nothing recent and nothing that really gives a definitive answer.

Dual megaflow 125 with durso, so there’s 4 holes. I currently have a single overflow 90 that was durso and I converted to herbie by running returns up and over the back. I actually like it a lot and I’m happy with it. Now I have a new tank with dual overflows.

If I convert both to herbie, obviously I still run the return over the back. Now, do both of the full siphon drains need to join to one pipe, which then has the gate valve to tune it? Or do I just run them separate with individual gate valves? Can that even work to match the return and drain if they’re separate? My thinking is they need to join.


Second scenario: do I convert to bean, using 3 holes as drains, and using one as a return? This would eliminate the returns going over the back, but obviously I’d only have one return now, so the flow wouldn’t be as evenly distributed throughout the display. That being said, I don’t rely much on my returns for flow, I prefer strategically placed wavemakers for overall flow.

Which would be a better plan? Are there any pros/cons to one over the other in my situation?

I'm in the process of this right now. Since this is my first sumped tank, I relied on friends here to guide me.

Same 125 with dual overflows. I decided to go with dual Herbie in the overflow box and run dual returns over the back. I've run the return plumbing but I'm still doing the drains, but my plan is to keep all drain lines separate and have 2 gate valves for tuning the main drain lines. Many many hours of research and back and forth from various friends with this setup has led me to this point.

I don't know what's better, rather just what I was looking to get out of my system.
