What are your phosphates?
Kit just came in mail & Phosphates are ~.25 ppm. API kit only reads results of: 0, .25 , .5 etc. Been doing 20% water changes every 3 days to get phosphates & nitrates down steadily & have started using 1 Tblsp carbon in media bag (only a 10G tank)

I've made the same mistake before so don't feel bad, if you like something that doesn't look up to par at your LFS let it sit. It will either die there OR come back and keep an eye on it sometimes you win sometimes someone else gets it. I have a tiny little Toadstool that every on pased by at my LFS I watched it for over 3 months before I rescued it two months later an it is doing fine. The key to reef husbandy is go slow and don't make impulse purchases I've been doing this on am off for 20+ years an I still goof up sometimes we were all N00Bs once...
