Eel in reef tank?

Like @littlefoxx I wonder what made you think purchasing this was a good idea in the first place. By your own admission, you got it 4 months ago with the intent of rehoming it when it got "too big"... WHY??
That's a common practice and don't act like it isn't. People trade fish all the time for a variety of different reasons

Maybe you guys should redirect your attention to all of the dying eel threads I'm seeing below this post. Those animals are actually not doing well and not eating or have another issue. mine continues to eat and be happy and swim throughout my tank when he wants
I have also put input in those threads. And told the people with small tanks not to house eels in them, you can check in those threads. Im not telling you something I didnt say in those other threads youre talking about

No I'm not saying that but I'm saying this isn't that serious, I posted this to have a conversation about eels in established reef tanks and not about an eel that people think is controversial to have in a small reef tank and mentioned that he's not staying in the tank for much longer and people are like "fish abuse " no. It's not at all fish abuse, each animal you put in your tank should be according with the tank size at its size and what the animal grows into, and yes people do accommodate for things getting too big and eventually having to be moved that has been done in every way imaginable in the fish hobby even intentionally

How was it already too big? Do you know how big it was when I bought it?
You said you've had it 4 months, it's 14", and it hasn't grown much..

No it was smaller than that, it's definitely grown a decent amount since then, I'm saying that he's not a big fat eel yet and before he even gets any fatter he's gonna be out anyway

Thats what people have been saying this whole time but this isnt at all what youve actually done with this fish. This is at least a 2 foot fish. Minimum tank size is usually 75 gallons. So explain to me how you say that but put this fish in an 18 gallon? That makes no sense. Thats literally the opposite of what you did here

Since we are in the eel topic, last night there was a super tiny eel like thing in my tank. It was maybe 1-2 inches and super thin. Had eyes and it slithered up a macro algae I have in my tank. As soon as I turned on lights it went down into a rock. Is there a eel that small? Could not take a picture and haven’t seen it since.

I mean that in the sense of its current size, if you plan on moving it it shouldn't be an issue anyway, I enjoy trading for corals or other fish with other reefers so that's what I'll end up doing with him

1 to 2 inch eel? I don't think so probably a worm or something have you had eels before?

These threads are what turns into the dying eel and sick eel threads you talk about below; so it is serious.

As far as your question you claimed you wanted about an eel in a reef tank, yes Ive kept my eels in a reef tank. Two of them in my old 125 gallon that was a reef. Decided not to keep a reef in the 300 gallon, too many nutrients created by my eels and predatory fish I keep. But it wasnt an 18 gallon reef with an eel like here.

Yeah it was super tiny and super thin. It did have a face and it wrapped around the algae. I was trying to take photo but it just slithered down into the rock. I never had a eel but I did just get the macro algae. Do the eels come out only at night? I know nothing about them.

You should make a new thread for an ID and try to get a video that way people can keep track of the topic and not change in the middle of the forum! Im wondering if you have a tiny blenny of some kind. :)

When you are able to get a picture, start a new thread in the identification forum

Edit: sorry @littlefoxx, I guess I was still writing when you posted

Yeah I was thinking about that too as a problem because he's gotta be producing some waste that's a lot more significant than anything else in the tank

Also looking back at the picture he looks way bigger than he actually is I promise he's gonna be out soon and he's doing just fine

Some waste doesnt even cover it, I and many others who keep eels here have oversized skimmers for that reason. I have 4 eels in my 300 gallon, my skimmer is rated for a 500 gallon tank.

Look no one here is trying to bash you, we are just trying to get you to see that you need to respect the care of the fish. We all want to help, but no one can help you when youre arguing about why you are right and everyone else that commented is wrong

You probably aren't the best person to be doling out advice or opinions on eels right now...
