So when doing research early on in my reefing I came across a couple of interesting projects : Egg Crate Frag Racks and Aragocrete homemade cement/aragonite sand rocks.
Egg Crate racks are simple and efficient but not overly pretty. Take some egg crate light diffuser and cut it to size. Using a heat gun, you can bend the legs to the length you want them.
Aragocrete rocks uses almost equal portions of Portland cement and Aragonite sand. You can also add Water softener salt crystals to help make them more porous.
After several variations of each I had an idea: why not combine the two?
One thing to keep in mind - the Aragocrete rocks will cause a pH and alkalinity spike so they have to be soaked first to allow the lime to leach.
Also, if using something other than Portland cement, if it has silicates or silica sand it can increase diatom growth.
