For those of you wondering about where to find a similar tank to mine (Skimmerless and sumpless) I present to you my inspiration: Aquabucket's 40Br

I truly have a hard time finding people as good as Aquabucket when it comes to smaller non-traditional systems. His tank definitely awes people, and even more so when you realize the equipment he uses to sustain it all. Unfortunately this tank has since been torn down, but the greatness of it shouldn't ever be forgotten!

Well I am back from my family trip and while the tank didn't come out perfectly as I left it, it's all fixable. I think this is one of my most favorite things about softy tanks, they tend to be hardier and more forgiving than other types of tanks.

I'll start the fixing with a typical 5G waterchange, maybe 10G to get things more back to normal. I know the Carbon and GFO change-out is due soon so maybe a 5G would be best to not over stress the tank with "newness". That reminds me I need to order more Carbon and GFO!

I also got some free corals from a friend while in Florida. One of my favorite corals is the Montipora Cap. It's not a softie, but I think it will be hardy enough to deal with my tank's environment. I got the orange/red cap (3 pieces), the purple-rim green cap, and Ked's reds (sp?) zoos. After a 12 hour trip in the car, a moderate water acclimation, and an iodine dip, they still look great in the tank. Now it's just the matter of finding them places in the tank and sticking them there. This leads to my other issue:

I'm a bit torn on something. I'm a pretty strong supporter of less corals more growth. I've steered my tank in that direction for the most part but I have one rock that's not following that rule. The right arch has quite a bit going on: Rics, green tree coral, anthelia, and a knobby leather. Most are frags, though the Rics have been growing well and own most of the real-estate. I found a great spot on that same arch for the zoos I got. It kind of just fell there while I was trying to clean up the tank, and it opened on the spot. I figure why move it when it's clearly happy there. I'll call it a "garden rock"! ;)

As for the Monti cap frags I've decided something. While I claim my tank as a softy tank, I like caps far too much to keep them out of the tank, especially when given beautiful large frags for free. I am lucky as I have two spots for them to grow into a nice colony. I am going to try to glue the three pieces of red together, to form a single piece, and then attach it to it's new home rock.

Unfortunately the overflow was not constructed while in Florida. Between my new son Cayden and a secret project for Reef on the Rocks, my small business, I just couldn't get the time to build it. I'm thinking of purchasing one from fosterandsmith: Overflow It should house the HOB's intake fine. It's a little deeper than I'd like but realistically I can't complain. :xd:

I'll take some more pics of the tank once I finish these mini-projects.

Ack sorry guys my post-alert thingamabob didn't let me know anyone posted on here!

MarvinsReef - Thanks, will do!

aalvarado87 - I don't have a link because autozone had these LEDs on clearance. Realistically go to any car parts store and they'll have it. Only other thing you need is a power adapter (I got mine from Walmart). After that just connect the wires and you're set.

I got lucky with that closet, but I know reefers must cry at the fact that I only have wires going there since I am sumpless!

Update - So I pulled the trigger on getting the overflow front box with a pump in it to get that water surface moving like it should. I am hoping the intake of the HOB sump fits into it to keep the minimal machine look going. I have been racking my brain about how to get the Monti Caps implemented into the tank. Real Estate is getting prime in the tank... and it looks like I am going to have to make some hard choices.

I did finally clean the tank. I turkey bastered the tank like crazy, brushed out some sparse hair algae (2 spots), and did the 5G water change. It definitely looks a lot better but for aesthetic reasons only, I kinda regret hvaing so many snails in the tank. I love the clean sand bed look, but all these snails doing their job doesn't allow for that. :xd: Oh well guess I'll have to live with it.

Anyway once the stuff comes in, and I finish putting the corals where they're going to be I'll take some pics to post!

Haha, I'm workin' on it! Heck it looks like the Monti Caps will get the best seats in the tank. ;)

Holy poo poo, I checked my order and now I find it won't arrive till the 12th! Man talk about needing patience... this is killing me.. I want to get this done already!

I've decided what I am going to do about coral placement. I am removing the GSPs, moving the toadstool on the right arch. Both of these spots will be given to the caps... the red/orange on the left, where the GSPs are, and the purple rim on the right-side arch.

Well a small update, but no pics yet. My off week ended up being REALLY busy (Made a stepping stone path for starters) and my poor tank didn't get the love it deserves. I was able to do a water change that it really needed, and I did get most of the new frags placed. Of course I knocked one of the frags off (Read: Broke it off) and I am out of putty.

I installed the new overflow thingie I bought earlier and thank goodness it works with the HOB sump intake. My water surface problem is FINALLY gone. The output from the overflow pump is a lot stronger than I anticipated, but it worked out for the better.

I am waiting to do another water change before I do pics as I need to move the snail shells out of the front of the tank. It just looks littered and annoys me to no end. Aside from that I just need to clean up the bulbs, scrape the tank's minor coralline spots and remove a part of the rockscape, as I did something fun with the three red monti frags.

This basically means pictures will come sometime between 02/25-03/03. Even then I have some work to do with my business (Deliveries and new equipment set up), plus I am supposed to install/make a driveway gate. Here's hoping nothing new pops up! :xd:

Finally some Pictures!

Sorry I am late guys. It's been a heck of a couple of weeks, and currently I am dealing with a sick 4 month old.. not to mention us being sick as well.

Anyway these were taking a little bit after doing quite a bit of work. Unfortunately I wasn't able to finish some of the chores I needed to do like razoring the tank, removing the excess piece of liverock, and... I think that's it. I am sure I am forgetting about something but y'all came for pics so let's see'em.

As you can see from the above, the tank's a little hazy. That and I finally mounted some of the Monti Caps I got. I'll eventually finish what I set out to do.. plus the rest of the chores like replacing carbon and GFO (Due in two days), razor the tank, etc.

Some things noted:

- What minor algae patches I had in the tank pretty much rotted away. Not really sure how considering I've neglected this tank the past few weeks, but kept up with feeding. Lucky me I guess!

- The excess rock is bothering me, but I plan on giving it to someone who wants it. I forgot to give it to a friend of mine that I helped with on a rockscape. One of my many "doh" moments.

- I still need to replace that arm looking plumbing on the overflow. It's ugly and unnecessary, but again the tank has been neglected... I'll eventually get to it.

- I love small cerinth snails but **** do they make my sand bed look littered. It's annoying to siphon them up and move them to the back. I'll eventually find a suitable replacement for them but for now they are doing their jobs well.

Pics from the day after

So I had some time to snap a couple more pics for y'all. The day after a clean up always looks best to me, even if I still need to do some more stuff.

I forgot to mention, I am really excited about how the Monti Cap frags will grow. I say this because of how I positioned them in the tank. They will slightly grow into each other, creating a sorta inter-woven Monti Cap goodness! Well.. I hope anyway.

I just realized I still need to vinegar the wetside of the MP10, and also need to replace the carbon and GFO. Sigh... I just don't feel like it right meow!

Did some more needed cleaning and the Osmolator

Got the Vortech, HOB Sump outlet, and float switch cover cleaned with vinegar! I only need to razor the tank, remove the excess piece of live rock in the tank, and get rid of that arm thingie on the overflow. You can see the difference from my FS in the last few posts to this one below.

P1010281Medium.jpg

And this is my favorite Reef Janitor... I've always had yellow cucumbers in my tank since I can remember reefing.

P1010284Medium.jpg

I also made an order to BRS for ROX carbon, granular GFO (Not the dense stuff), a frag rack (I am going to start actively fragging soon), and a Tunze Osmolator replacement pump.

Tunze Osmolator? I think it's time to finally pull the trigger in going back to kalk to make my reefing routine a lot simpler and less demanding. This will help out majorly when I go on trips or just can't get to dosing the tank. It'll keep me more consistent, especially now that my rock making season is fast approaching and my free time will be limited.

Some fun news reefers! I went to Atlanta for the weekend to enjoy some SEC basketball action, and naturally stopped by some reef stores. Atlanta is a hotbed for reefing activity, no need to look for further proof than the fact they recently hosted MACNA!

Anyway when my friend agreed, off we went. I had time to visit two stores and both had interesting surprises for me. The first was Atanta Aquarium, and it literally opened a week before my arrival... what timing! Clearly it was a new store as many things were still being constructed, but I am so happy they decided to open up to the public regardless. The surprise? One of the two partners happens to be Rit, from Rit Aquatics! You would think I would have known this as I peruse Reef2Reef often but being a new daddy it must have just slipped pass my tired mind. I snagged a Crocea Clam and a Skunk Cleaner Shrimp. I have been looking for a Skunk cleaner shrimp for a while, and glad I found it at Atlanta Aquarium because their price was really nice. My total was about 60-65 bucks! I will definitely go back there when I come back to Atlanta again.

I also stopped by a store called Pure Reef. It's a beautiful store and something about nagged familiar at me. I met the staff and again, I know I've met them before. Eventually the owner told me they used to be STAR Aquatics in Augusta. That was it, I went to a Reef Meeting at their store in Augusta. Apparently they moved back to Atlanta, in their old location, and I have to say nothing has changed... and that's good. The store is immaculate, the stock easily visible and healthy. They know of a couple of reefer friends of mine in Greenwood who traveled to Augusta just to shop at their store. Small world. I unfortunately did not have time to come back to their store on my way out of Atlanta, talk about being heart broken! I will definitely go by their shop again as soon as I make it back to Atlanta!

Pictures of the clam, Skunk Cleaner, and the tank to come once everything has acclimated!
