I had a very similar problem with my elegance coral which lasted for maybe 2-3 months, first it started around a small portion of the edge of the coral, and then slowly it began to affect the rest of the coral until it basically shrunk into the skeleton. But I had kept it in the tank since there wasn't any exposed skeleton and with some time it has been coming back, I didn't do anything special for it except for moving it to lower light and more frequent testing.

What you are seeing is the Mesenterial filaments of the coral, I find that some corals extrude these when they are stressed out(just an observation), so I believe that it may have been some kind of infection.

I sort of messed up on the order, but the 3rd and 4th picture is about a week ago, it's been looking even better. I found that dipping didn't really help at all.
What are your water parameters and maybe look into feeding the coral I found that it would look better when occasionally feeding reef roids.
