Element levels when using Chaetogro?

On my old 120 I had a 30g remote fuge.
Never used cheatogro though.
I had to take all of the chaeto and red macro out as it dropped no3 and po4 to very low levels due to its fast growth.
I ran and still run DSR trace in all my systems. It is added to the ato res and is dosed whenever the ato kicks in.
It has macro and micro elements but only 6.
Magnesuim
Potassium
Sulphate
Boron
Iodine
Manganese
I have attatched an Triton test I did to show levels.
I was only dosing 6ml a day in a 150. Same in my current 150 and 2ml a day in both 50's.
Lithium and molybdenum are the only 2 that are elevated.

I am surprised not to see iron in that list. While not all macro needs iodine; all things that grow need iron.

Iron, even when zero on Triton, does not mean there is none available.
I have never dosed it and dont plan on it.
 
I consider iron dosing to be useful for a reef tank. Some folks have seen an immediate change in macroalgae.
I dose Iron and I see greens macro darken up the next light cycle.

Once when dosing iron in a 55G Gracilaria Hayi growout tank, I spilled a liter of iron concentrate with water so dark, It was difficult to see the back glass. Each day the water cleared up more until it was stellar in 7 days. One thing I noted on the G Hayi was raised surfaces on Hayi and after 2 weeks the raised ares disappeared. It was then I recalled an article in which Randy addressed iron storage capacity of plants.
 
Would that be true about N & P, also.
N,P can be kept low as long as you feed your fish. Heavy in/out has worked well over the years.
I do not dot directly feed the corals.
I am thinking I need to give iron a go to see what it may do.

I’m thinking of developing some mixed diy trace/minor/major element recipes for different purposes using readily available chemicals.

One I have in mind is for growing macroalgae and turf algae. Let’s call this recipe R1. Lol

I was thinking to base it off of published analyses of macroalgae and/or turf algae. R1 won’t include N and P, but a related recipe will be an N and P supplement to use at a fixed ratio to R1 to provide much of what such algae need from seawater. A macroalgae grow out tank might use both, while a refugium or ats might only use R1 or R1 plus one of the N and P, depending on tank values of N and P.

In any case, in preparation for such an endeavor, I’m looking to see if anyone has icp data on tank values when using commercial chaetogro by Brightwell as the primary trace element additive, and who grows a significant amount of macroalgae, or turf algae.

Reason being, If there’s a general trend toward chaetogro having excessive or deficient levels of its listed components, I could also take that into account. I know it will be impossible in any single case to distinguish use by a refugium or ats vs everything else in the display, so I’m looking for general trends.

Yes! This has me excited. Wish I had some data to give you but unfortunately my newest build isn’t running yet. Though I will be patiently waiting to test your recipe for this once you’ve come up with it. Roughly 1/3 of my water volume will be various macro algae's.

Interesting. As I saw the same thing it would appear that the balance of the solution is a bit off.

Higher up on the bottle than your picture, does it give the overview section? On the web site, that section says 13 essential elements even though the list below only shows 12, perhaps leaving iodine as the third.

Iodine is a little hard to dial in - in the sense that it will be depleted and then when you dose it, the consumption is very high at first, then it levels off. So lots of times a fixed dosing regimen that initially "matches the consumption" soon becomes way in excess and Iodine levels go high.

Another issue is the vey wide range of iodine uptake by macroalgae. Even within different species of chaeto it varies greatly, and red and brown algae can take up huge amounts (I saw some that were 1% iodine by dry weight, or 10,000 ppm)..

Of the macroalgae that marine aquarists most commonly keep, there is no iodine requirement data available (hence the studies to be reported in the second article). Chaetomorpha moniligera has been reported to contain 24 ppm iodine on a dry weight basis, Chaetomorpha antennina has been reported to contain 1,100 ppm iodine, and an undetermined Chaetomorpha species contained 360 ppm iodine. In a different study, Chaetomorpha antennina and Chaetomorpha linum were shown to contain 144 and 68 ppm iodine, respectively.
 
I would love to see a bunch of DIY trace additive recipes. I’m glad to pay TM for their A and K elements but would love the ability to make my own just because it’s fun

I have all of the compounds, as on the label of ChaetoGro bottle.
But I dont understand the "%" that they stated there. May you please explain briefly how can I mixed? Just pick 1 compound, I will understand the rest.
Let's say: Ca 0.14% --> How many CaCL2.2H2O / how much RO water?

For each element listed, the % tells you how many grams of it is in 100 grams (mL) of chaeto grow.

Each element you add is only a portion of the dry chemical it comes in.

In your example, calcium chloride dihydrate is only 27% calcium by weight, so if you want 0.14 grams of calcium, you need 0.52 grams of the product.

Thank you Randy. It is very tough to understand that % they stated. Thank you for your explanation.

Yes we would love to know your recipe for Chaeto. But for now I may just mix according to Brightwell's formula, and I may modified some element content that I detect it high through ICP result (if any).
