English, grammar, usage....arghhhhh!

When I went back to school, I had a professor that was a serious grammar/spelling/usage monster. I pride myself in writing well so you can imagine my shock when he handed back the first paper I wrote for him and saw huge red X’s across entire pages and paragraphs with “NO” written across the top. I took many classes from him over the years and we ended up being good friends. He’s a great guy and very smart. I learned a lot from him. Still, I hated writing papers for him.

Forth and fourth ... hehe. Jk

I’m not bothered by it. I laugh at some. It tells me something about the author at times. I edit scientific papers daily and have edited all 6 of my children’s college papers for years as well red penned many of my own students papers. I notice them but I don’t sweat it on forums and text. Now, if you are professional sending a document or resume I am all about circular filing ones with all the mistakes mentioned above!
You grade papers? You poor soul. I would pull my hair out!

I got my only A- out of all A’s during my MBA due to a comma police professor in my first course!!! Never let that happen again! Haha

I often read and hear incorrect spelling and grammar. This does not take into the amount of maleprops and positively hilarious usage encountered too. A great majority of the time I will overlook it as it's not my job to run around giving advice. Plato did that and look how well it turned out for him! What really irks me, however, is when people who are learned make glaring mistakes repeatedly. It always causes me to question the level of learnedness they claim.

Below is a video that reminded me of this topic. WARNING; some may find the language strong.

We have a lot of amazing writers on this forum. I’d love to get their take on this. One that immediately comes to mind is @4FordFamily. You out there somewhere?
I’m around. I’m in Orlando are Disney World for the week. I am what Kyle (@HotRocks) calls a Grammar Blank... referencing a place in Europe where a tyrant ruled.

Using "guest" to designate plural because it "sounds like more than one"

I am a 50-year-old man with a six grade education it’s a long story about why but there’s no need to get into that. I find this thread so offensive I already feel bad about not having a good education.I sure didn’t expect to come on R2R and be ridiculed.I do realize this thread isn’t directed at me but it is very hurtful to people like me.I am not trying to pick a fight with anybody in anyway just had to get it off my chest. Hope everybody has a great day.

That's why it's in the Lounge. Being a fan of proper grammar isn't a knock against anyone. If you are offended, don't read the thread talking about proper grammar.

It’s on the top of todays post. I didn’t go hunting for It.

Ok, so I consider myself a grammar/English/usage policeman. I correct my kids all the time. They typically ignore me. But, there’s a few things that bug the poop out of me. Anemones host clowns. Clowns do not host anemones. So if you say “what clowns will host this anemone?” you should be saying “will this anemone host this clown?”

Also, “I done went” is a huge pet peeve of mine. There are teachers around here that use phrases like that. I don’t get it.

I do understand what a pain it is to text and work on a tablet and still spell and punctuate properly. I abbreviate often and I can forgive much. I do, however, see stuff that makes my skin crawl.

So what English/grammar/usage errors do find most offensive?
Your so right

It bugs the crap out of me to the point where if your grammar sucks, I pretty much just discount your advice or your post in general. People say this isn't English class, but we are conversing in English. If you can't get there/their/they're correct, or it's/its, or you're/your, or you are putting apostrophes on plurals, or you don't use any punctuation, I apologize in advance for not taking you seriously.

Your making an excellent point many people forget there education soon after it is completed

I especially like how a phone auto corrects anemone to enema. At least they always blame the phone.

The fact you are referencing people forgetting their education and misusing the word “there” is absolutely perfect. Did you forget your education too? Great reply! Made me laugh
