And the support fused completely to the print. Not good. Going to reprint with PETG and use PLA for the support interface.
 
Big word incoming!

I started the reprint last night with PLA supports and the print failed pretty quickly - I'm fairly certain my PETG was dampish. I replaced the silica in the AMS and let it sit overnight.

Big word? I had an epiphany last night! This stupid thing is a 4 hour print and it keeps failing towards the top (except this last one that was a fluke). It uses a TON of support to support the top of the clip for the pump. Epiphany? I flipped it on the side. Now it has a small row of thin supports under the hanger and two for the clip. 4 hours reduced to 1.5 hours AND it eliminates the "tall print wiggle" factor. I'll be printing it here around 6.

The other nice thing about printing it this way is instead of the layers holding the weight so if any single layer fails the whole print fails - now each layer is vertical when hanging so instead of each layer having to be fused properly for strength, each layer can independently hold the weight of the gyre! Built in strength and endurance.

Next: redesign the IceCap 2K vertical hanger and reprint it!

I think they make a cream for that, something about if it doesnt get better after 2 weeks consult your doctor...


Really, that is a great idea to lay it down, stronger, less supports, and less chance of failure. Win, win, win.
 
New filter cup printing. I'm going to remove the filter roller temporarily, use cups with PolyFil, and start snowing the tank.

Step 1: print the cup (started):

Step 2: remove Fleece Roller
Easily accomplished - roll just finished​

Step 3: install new filter cup and PolyFil

Step 4: snow the tank
CaCO3 already on hand​
Will add some Lice nitrifying bacteria and MB7​
Step 5: water change (probably tomorrow)

Step 6: mix more water

Step 7: snow the tank again (probably tomorrow)

Step 8: maybe another water change Sunday

Step 9: mix more water again

Step 10: snow the tank again Sunday

Step 11: maybe a third water change Monday

Step 12: mix more calcium, magnesium, and alkalinity and top off doser

Interesting decision on the build plate positioning. I had to make similar decisions on my feed cups and did the opposite orientaion.
 
Or flipped on top vs bottom? Mine is domed so it needs to be this way.

What are you looking to accomplish by snowing the tank? Cloudy water and looking to catch whatever is in there or something else? I've heard of coral snow before, but never used it myself :)
 
Opposite as in side to side vs end to end? Or diagonal?
I printed with the grid at the bottom and the lip at the top using outside build plate only supports. Kept the supports out of my grid area which I thought was important because it was for feed so needed to be as smooth as possible.

Makes sense since it is domed, Never considered that option.

Yeah. I've really been bad on tank maintenance over the last couple of months. I want to "floc" the tank and get some of the TSS reduced and any yellowness on the water reduced as well. The PolyFil will grab most of the junk that's stuck together.

I used to use it in my old tank frequently and it seemed to do pretty good.

Also, potentially I'm dealing with some Cyano and this can help with that sometimes.

I've flocced a swimming pool before, so understand the concept! I too have been neglecting tank maintenance. I'll keep this in mind if we continue to have a cyano problem in the wife's tank.

My feeding tube has grating at the top so I print it upside down as well. 😁
