At some point in time every successful reefer is going to have to add the BIG 3. I’m really glad that I stumbled upon ESV B-Ionic.
My water changes were no longer effective to nourish my corals with Alk. Cal. and Mag. This particular product along with 2 Kamoer 1X dosing pumps have knocked it out of the ballpark for me.
I’ve attached photos of two of my corals which have been beneficiaries of this 2 part system. The Goni is now 3 years old. And Euphillia 6 months. It’s by no means the only way to add these necessary elements, but it’s simple and straightforward.

1. Make the case for your method

for those many reefers looking to do the same.

ESV B-ionic is an excellent product, but aside from being a good way to add calcium , alkalinity and some magnesium, it is nothing special. There are many similar products. :)

Hi Randy nice to meet you. Glenn, so I totally agree with you that it’s nothing special, I believe I wrote that as well in the post. Although, kalk scares the heck out of me. Lol. My point as well is that at some point water changes just aren’t enough and the hobbyist needs to step up his/her game.

Yes indeed....much more selection these days

Years ago I used to make my own 2 Part Additive from your DIY recipe. Dow Flake at first, then Kent Turbo Calcium.

http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-02/rhf/index.php

Sometimes I would make the 3rd Part for Magnesium, but over the year I discovered that Water Changes are good enough for keeping Mag Levels stable.

All 3 DIY recipes did the job, just more work.

You’re a bit more ambitious than I am. I’m more a “twist off cap” and pour guy. Lol

Esv works great for me. I’ve been using it for years now with great success.
Hilltop Aquariums sounds like you might be a lfs? I actually got the idea from a local fish store here in Arizona. I saw my exact Protein skimmer in their sump. And the 2 bottles of B-Ionic next to the sump. But the clincher was the amazing display tank above it all. I was very impressed.

I am a service company and I personally use ESV on my reef at home. I recommend it to all my clients for the ease of use and constant mixup.

Nothing could be easier, and cheaper then Arm & Hammer baking soda and RO/DI(Randy's Recipe 1 or 2). One of those products you probably have in your cupboard, and we all have RO/DI. I do not bake it, and have it down to weight, so it's super simple to make.

For calcium I use BRS bulk calcium chloride. MAG is replenished with WC.

Do you feel you get sufficient trace elements from your water changes, month by month?

I have colorful, growing corals, and ICP tests says they are fine. So I would assume my weekly WC schedule is enough to get the job done.

Been doing it that way for 10+ years with great success. Have no desire to change. Whats the old saying.....

If it aint broken, don't try to fix it.

I Am using 2 part on all my systems and I want to see what you guys think. but my tanks are all consuming alk 3x times more than calcium. Is this normal for you as well? Can this be the issue why I have really red coraline algae on the rocks?

What do you guys think?

Here are some of the consumptions:

Red sea 140 gallon:
alk 35ml
cal 12 ml
mag 10ml

170 gallon systems
alk 40ml
ca 15ml
mag 10 ml

320 gallon systems
alk 70ml
ca 20ml
mag 15 ml

My tanks also consume different amounts especially when esv is first introduced. It seems like the longer it is in use the closer they get. I wouldn’t worry about it just keep an eye on your parameters.

That’s an interesting question. I’ve always been of the belief that while running 2 part, it should be done equally. Period.! So an obvious question, for instance, what would happen if you increased your calcium to 70 mls to match your alk in your 320 gallon system?

Which two part? ESV B-ionic?

Not all are designed for 1:1 dosing.

There are some other ways you are adding alk or calcium to the water (or consuming it), so the needed dosing is not always 1:1.

Water changes, rising or falling or dosing nitrate, and sulfur denitrators all mess with the levels of alkalinity and/or calcium. So can using tap water for evaporation top off.
