Fairy Wrasse Not Eating

Hi all,

I've had a pintail fairy wrasse in QT for 5 days, and he has shown little interest in food (pellets, mysis, and roe with or without garlic). I've ordered tiger pods and brine shrimp eggs to try to entice him to eat. Any other suggestions? Thanks!

Is it swimming around the tank? If so do you have a powerhead in there to move the food around? They like moving food.

If its not swimming around he may be stressed or even have some parasites.

My experience has been if they are not stressed or si k they are good eaters.

He is currently hiding beside a PVC tube in the tank. When I remove it, he swims around and is very curious, but shows no interest in food. I do have an air tube and HOB filter to keep the food moving as much as possible.

I did dose Prazipro for 24 hours, then did a 20% water change and carbon to treat for flukes. Would you suggest Metroplex in the water? I was going to add it to the food with Focus.

Prazi does suppress the appetite of fish. I also have a pintail fairy wrasse in QT and after a day or so it started to venture out and nibble on mysis shrimp, now its investigates everything and is a pig. I added GC and focus to spirilina brine and it loves it. Good luck, I hope it eats because they r awesome fish as u already know.

Bump. He is getting more comfortable and occasionally swimming around now that I've added some live rock for him to hide under. I am covering the tank with a towel after adding food to reduce stress, but can't tell if he's eating.

Update: he started eating a couple of days ago and was very active and inquisitive. I thought that he was dying this morning though (he was in a deep sleep) and scared him. Haven't seen him since. I dosed the tank with metroplex in place of a second round of prazi.

Added ~200 tig pods to the tank yesterday.

Found the wrasse dead today. Very frustrated, as this is the second pintail I have lost in QT. If anyone has advice (like not QT or a QT protocol), it would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry for your loss. I started using a QT protocol that @Humblefish , @HotRocks , and @4FordFamily came up with and so far it is working. I keep the salinity of the QT tank the same as what the fish come in, usually 1.020, but I would ask and check, by matching the salinity you don't have to acclimate the fish, just float the bag in the QT tank to match temp and then release in QT. I raised salinity to match the DT with water changes over time. I switched to copper power and raise QT tank to 1 ppm before introducing fish into QT, then I raise it to 1.75 over 3 days. I have 3 fish in QT right now and so far they r doing good. A pintail fairy wrasse, a pink streaked wrasse, and a Tomini tang. If u have and questions on this QT protocol u can ask me or go to the source and ask @HotRocks . Good luck.

Oh, I forgot, I feed the fish spirulina brine shrimp soaked in focus and general cure for the first 2 weeks to get rid of internal parasites.

Sorry, I keep adding to this post, lol, but I will say that this QT protocol is by far the smoothest transition from shipping to QT I have had.

Thank you so much! When do you begin treating your fish (immediately vs. when they are eating regularly) and do you treat with prazi or other medication after copper power?

The fish automatically go into a QT with 1 ppm of copper power and then raise it to 1.75 over 3 days. I dont do prazi until after copper treatment. If u have enough tanks you can transfer the fish out of QT after 14 days at 1.75 ppm into a sterile tank and start treatment with prazi. U cant use prazi with copper, so I feed my fish brine shrimp soaked in focus and GC. I will do 2 treatments of prazi after copper. If for some reason a fish isn't eating then I may separate that fish until it is eating then start treatment, but remember, treating fish may cause them to not eat for a day or so, just have to keep an eye on them.

Prazi can be used with copper, but you need to keep the tank aerated. I have done it successfully, but I would wait.

I've had some bad luck with them I QT. Wrasses can be touchy with any treatment and it's never easy with them. I keep in qt with no meds for few days till they start eating. Another fish that's eating with them in QT can entice them to eat but usually they're not difficult to feed. I do copper and then 2 Rounds of prazi unless there are signs of flukes and Ich then I would run both together with water changes every day and topping off the meds to keep levels where they should be. I don't test for copper but just calculate how much to add based o. Water Change volume.
