I have a feather duster about 6 inches long and sometimes like when it suddenly retracts when something touches etc . then all these little white string bits are everywhere all over the tank what is this and is it harmful??

also
do you have to put the feather duster foot of it into the substrate or can you place It say I'm between rock work. problem I'm having with it is it is about 6 inches long the tube and find when crabs crawl on it then falls over and I find it lying flat on the substrate and need to pick it back up again each time.

Put it in a spot where the tube won't move, the worm will move the tube if it wants to. It can extend the tube from either end, it can even cut through the middle of the tube and continue a new tube in a different direction.

I place mine wedged in between the sand and rock, where it can't fall or be blown over, then I just let it alone, it will adjust and do what it wants.

Ive placed them with rocks for best stability. The fibers released are harmless defense mechanisms
