Female Multicolor/Pastel Angelfish

Hi there! I am new to taking care a reef tank. So I have a male multicolor angelfish and I want to buy a female multicolor angelfish. How do I distinguish if it is female angelfish? Thank you in advance.

I might be wrong, but I believe they are born unsexed and become females as adults, with the dominate one becoming male. Any young angel should be female. The only other way to sex them is by observing spawning.

The fish is a protogynous hermaphrodite. Similar but opposite of clownfish. It starts life female, and progress to male. Generally speaking any specimens approximately 1”(2.5cm) should be female. In nature a male
will claim dominance over a harem of females.

As far as best practice, first an acclimation box is recommended. Basically a way to isolate one from the other. As this is not guaranteed to allow each to know the other, a backup system that can home an angelfish should also. Be considered.

buy the smallest one you can find, maybe even special order one and be prepared to not have a pair form. If no male is present for long enough(only a few weeks to a month or so) a young fish will turn male so the smaller the better and even then no guarantee how ‘developed’ the fish actually is. I’ve bonded many pairs of angels and it can be tricky and there can be vicious fighting. It’s best if they come as a pair/harem

This post is a little old but I got some decent pics showing my male/female pair. Males fins are pointed and females rounded. Male is also more white up top and darker on the bottom half compared to female more brown/orange on the bottom.
