Is there any significant advantage to increase the number of slits on a water intake tube such that it would go further up the intake tube instead of just at the tip (bottom) - the ones that come from manufacturers all look the same like below. If the entire tube was like the bottom all the way to the top wouldn't the filtration be better?

If you add additional slits higher up, you will decrease the overall velocity of the water going through all the slits with the ones toward the bottom being most affected. This would also cause a reduction to how well the strainer can 'pull' particulates into the filter and out of the water column. The only real way that you could benefit from more slits would be to also increase the size of the pump and move more water through them.
