Does anybody here use hang-on filters for their reef tank?? I really have no prblem with my emperor-400 hang on filter and aqua-c remora hang-on protein skimmer for my 72 gal. I only have zoas/mushrooms/ricordea with 3 clown fishes. I really don't have problems except minor hair algae on some rocks which I scrape it off. I'm really pushing forward with getting a refugium, but wanted to know if I really need to have it. Thanks

Well, what is your maintenance schedule like? How often do you perform water changes, and how much water do you change? How often, and how much do you feed?
How long has the tank been running?
These will help determine what is happening in your tank and if your filtration is adequate.

Ops, I forgot. I do about 14% (10 gallon) water changes every 2 weeks and change the filter cartridge once a month. I feed my clowns once a day (few pellets). I have sunlight supply tek lights with 10k being on for about 6hrs and actinic on for 10 hrs/day. Hope this helps.

personally...i think i'd rather have a good refugium in place of the emperor power filter. you could get a nice HOB fuge and it would filter the water much better than the emperor ever could. if you'd like to run both, then more power to you. the only thing i wouldnt use with the emperor is the bio-wheels.

DO YOU THINK TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS ARE MORE HELPFUL OR HURTFUL TO REEFING?
