dumb question but do more filter socks mean less replacement, if one sock is replaced once a week, can that period be increased using two socks?

Having more socks technically can decrease the time before they get clogged. However your feeding schedule, nutrient level should dictate the change as what the sock catches can still raise nitrates in the tank if allowed to break down.
To me number of socks and size of socks help with higher flow ie if 1 socks allows 2 GPM and you have 4 now you increased flow if needed for turnover.

It has been shown Socks need changed out every three days or the organics break down and raise nutrients in the aquarium. That being said I don't run socks on my tank and have no issues.

No- still the same. I have a Bashea sump with triple socks and they all get changed at the same time. The one towards the front is less soiled but get changed

Not a dumb question. It is personal preference. I change mine rotating. So one per week. Why? I dunno. Just what I do and it works fine for me.

Good trouble: Have mushrooms ever become pests in your aquarium?
