Personally I’m not big on canisters, and I have two on my small tanks. One is an eheim and the other is a fluval 400.

the eheim does a way better job than the fluval tbh. It just has tremendously more media space in it, and the design is super simple. Never have cleaned the eheim and never will.

the fluval on the other hand - also has a protein skimmer and algae scrubber helping it because it just doesn’t do what the eheim does for me.
