Fin Rot?

Hey all,

Just got this Juvi yellow belly in the other day from NY Aquatic’s live sale. He looks super healthy. Got him in Tuesday and he’s been hammering frozen brine and nibbling at pellets and nori.

Noticed some spots on his fins and not sure if it’s early fin rot or just nipping from other fish. Noticed this right out of the bag. He’s only been here a couple days but not gotten any worse.

He’s in QT with a whitetail bristle tooth. I’ve not noticed any aggression between the twin they’re always next to each other. FYI I only had the bristle tooth a few days before the regal so wasn’t too worried about starting the clock over. As of this morning the QT is currently at 2.19 ppm (did a water change last night and it dropped from 2.3). I’m using copper safe.

They seem to be uploading darker. I tried adjusting the brightness and highlighting the spots in question.

This looks to be aggression in lieu of rot

I agree, looks like minor aggression from the tang. You may never see it happen - when you’re in the room, the fish will chill and just watch you. If it gets worse, you may need to stop in a tank divider (don’t use an acclimation box, too small).

I would also observe for any symptoms of Flukes (ragged fins being one). I've bought a number of fish from NJ Aquatic and some have had Flukes (verified with a microscope). If these 2 are in QT, you will be treating for that anyway.

If you got it this way 'right out of the bag' - it could just be from transit. also - ammonia can sometimes cause the slightly ragged appearance after transit. Not sure how to know otherwise except if its worsening.

Ya he had this straight out of the bag. NY Aquatics did mention they had him for 3 weeks prior to the live sale so possible aggression with other tank mates.

Ammonia is non detect in the QT and they’ll be a round of praxis after copper to cover flukes! I’m just going to chalk it up to minor aggression and keep an eye. He’s eating voraciously so so for so good.
