Does anyone have any ideas as to why my fish seem to be suddenly dying for no reason. I was up this morning and my Flame angel was on its side. Also it seems like my friedmani is also very unwell. The other two fish I have is a starry Benny and a firefish and I haven't seen them yet.

I tested the parameters.
Salinity is 1.025
Nitrates 5
Nitrites 0
Ammonia 0
Ph 8.2
Phos. .25
Temp 79.9

The newest fish I had is probably about 3 weeks old that is the Blenny. They all seemed fine last night when they were eating.

The inverts seem to be fine as well as coral.

The only difference I can think of is that I used a somewhat older frozen mysis shrimp to feed them last night than the usual one. I have a batch I don't like to use as often because the mysis are bigger than the others and the fish seem to like the smaller ones better. But I decided to try and use up some of it. It's not that much older though. Maybe 5 months old at most and has been in the freezer. Other than that nothing has changed that's out of the ordinary

Does anyone have any ideas?

Any signs of stress (red gills, discoloration, labored breathing) or any skin issues with your remaining fish?

Do you have a picture of the fish? If they're expiring that quickly some sort of parasite that got introduced into the tank would be my guess. Given the time frame velvet is the most likely culprit

Given that the remaining ones are in hiding it very hard to see places I want to say no. But the flame angel did look like it had a slight white hazing / spotting on it when I had seem it last very late last night and also seemed to be breathing fast.

What is velvet and how can it be that fast. How can it be introduced. I've had the tank up and going about a year and a half now. Maybe 2 years

It's a parasite that usually makes its way in on a fish, you mentioned that you added a fish in about 3 weeks ago, it's possible it was carried in on that.

Any distinguishing features for velvet? Yes I introduced a new fish but it seemed fine so did the others till suddenly tonight/this morning.

I also added some stress coat to the tank to try to save any that may be alive and I moved the air pump which I had in the basement the sump directly into the tank itself to try to provide more air.

Is there anything else I could do to help them out?

Could the food have been the issue at all?

The only other thing that's different is I added another heater to my sump about 2 weeks ago to try to keep the temp more stable in the winter. It was brand new though.

BTW my tank is 30 gal with a 30 sump. I forgot to mention that.

I am also using api to test the water. And an instant ocean hydrometer. For salinity

I doubt the food is the culprit. Very possible the newest addition brought something in. Di you QT the blenny at all? I bought a flame angel a while back, and it was fine for close to a month before velvet reared it's ugly head. Wiped out all but a couple of my fish in a matter of days. Pics would definitely be helpful.

Do you have any photos of the fish? Velvet is usually identified by physically looking at the fish, it'll look like someone sprinkled a salt shaker on them.

I did not because I don't have a quarantine system and the fish store supposedly does that from what I was told.

I don't have any photos the fish are hard to get to at the moment I have a lot of rock work.

I did look up velvet online and from what I can tell it looka very similar to what I saw on the flame angel late last night when it was dark in the tank. When I saw it it was swimming in the current of the power head although backwards. And it seemed to have a good dusting of tint spots on it but being that the tank was somewhat dark at the time I couldn't fully tell. Looked kind of like being covered in tiny micro bubbles. But I didn't notice any think like that earlier in the day so whatever happened happened super fast. Can velvet act that fast?

I will try to get pictures but might not be able to fill later in the day.

Luckily velvet has not gotten in my tank before, but I’ve read it’s a VERY fast killer, almost a death sentence. I’m sorry to hear about this. I would go grab a cheap 10-20 gallon quarantine tank and start treatment on the rest of your fish ASAP. Good luck!

Cupramine will do it. If you get a 10 gallon hospital tank, just pull 10 gallons out of your display tank to put in it, then you can quarantine right away and start the copper treatment. Just add 10 gallons of new water to your display tank, voila! Instant hospital.
