These are awesome, but one note often overlooked. Calibrate it in the same light that you will be using for testing. Background light has an impact. I always test and calibrate in the exact same spot in the room.

Ideas and recommendations welcomed

Hello R2R, I have been kicking this around some and as @d2mini pointed out I might have to do a yearly cleaning on the bottom of the sump... so I redesigned it and would like to get everyone's thoughts... the PVC is drilled lengthwise to allow opposing directions of water to jet out from them, and a ball value added to either dial it down or up...

The idea is two additional cross flow PVC pieces lower at the bottom pushing in opposing directions with a full mat of raised black egg crate just over it. The egg crate will hold the live rock off the bottom hopefully allowing water to flow under it and punch all the detritus and junk off the bottom... that's the theory anyways.

What do you guys and gals think?

Hmm interesting idea is it run by your return or another pump? What collects the sediment and detritus from the bottom? If enough flow is provided it seems like it should work

yes it's run of the 1-1/2" return line, it's reduced down to 1" PVC, and in theory should keep the sediment and detritus suspended long enough for the skimmer and maybe filter socks to remove it.

I'm considering adding threaded end with caps so I can pipe clean the runs if needed, but that would require removing all the live rock... so undecided on that one.

Me too, should be interesting... will know in a few weeks, soon as I get the skimmer and more live (dry) rock.

It should be, all the calculations I've run, taking into consideration length, size, and PVC fittings have me at a little better then 2800gph.
