Honestly I wouldn’t do a dam thing. I’d let it ride! I would fill the reactor with carbon and run it . Here’s a trick I do. Fill half way with carbon put sponge over carbon and add poly fill loosely to top and run it. It polishes the water while removing impurities

Will do!
Done. Removed the carbon/gfo mix from reactor and replaced it with carbon/sponge/poly. It's now alive!

The funny thing is that she has been posting in other threads. I am fairly sure she missed the notification for her own thread.

Yep I noticed! Racking up her “Like” points too! lol

Congrats on your win in the MOTY contest!

Paging Miss Diana... yoohoo... @fishface NJ
I actually never saw these until now. 😲 Don't get notifications on My Thread. You are better off sending smoke signals if you want me to respond to my thread. Sorry

I installed a LED light on the aquarium before I left for Florida because I have a test coral. I left for Florida on April 9 and returned on the 15th.
When I returned, I found green algae and diatom on the sand only under the LED light. I didn't think I would get green algae on the "rock" since it was in my sump for 18 months

4/17 attached the GFO/carbon mini reactor to the stand. Has not been activated yet. I figured since I was working in the sump area I would do something that I’ve been putting off.

4/18 I removed the 20 pounds of Miracle Mud that was located in the refugee section of the sump. I always wondered if that was affecting my PO4 and NO3. Cleaned the refuge section and added back 30 gallons of new water to the sump.

Removed another 30 gallons of water from the tank and added back new salt water

My PO4 and NO3 have dropped and I believe it’s from the removal of the miracle mud.

How do I handle the algae and diatoms?
Do I need to add sodium nitrate to my water?

Time. Monitor and see what it wants to do.

Interesting fact...

Your notebook is set up just like mine...

Honestly I wouldn’t do a dam thing. I’d let it ride! I would fill the reactor with carbon and run it . Here’s a trick I do. Fill half way with carbon put sponge over carbon and add poly fill loosely to top and run it. It polishes the water while removing impurities

How often do you replace the carbon? I have BRS ROX in the canister. Do you replace the poly only when changing the carbon, not before?

Once a month for carbon once a week for poly. When I change the poly since I have it open I also rinse the sponge and flush the carbon with some tap water to remove any large particulates as the ROX is very fine and compacts. I reinstall sponge and fresh poly and good for another week. Btw when replacing carbon and or combo of gfo/carbon mix rinse the canister under water before you install until it runs clear. Doing it like BRS recommends wastes good tank water and clogs the sponge as the water runs from bottom to top. 🙂
