Hey all,
I’ve recently started a reef tank. It’s cycled with lights on and I currently have a pair of clowns, a trio of green chromis and a CUC. I will be adding corals and am trying to figure out what else I want to stock. At the LFS I saw some flame angels, and what a beauty they are! The employee helping me said it would be a great centerpiece for my tank, and said it would do great in my 40 gal cube w 20 gal sump. But after doing more research, it seems the internet recommends much larger tanks for them. Thoughts? Recommendations for stocking?

i cant think

approximately 23x23x14 “
I’d personally want 3’ length for a flame as they’re one of the larger dwarfs. You could have a Cherub or Flameback Angel.

They dont exceed 2.5 -3" and is a great candidate for your tamnk. I at one time had 4 (one in each tank and one was a 50g drop off tank and other a 45 cube)

I honestly disagree, I’ve seen quite a few that have been in 4’+ tanks and they’ve gotten to a good 4-4.5” in length. By some I mean 4-5 out of approximately 10 in the recent years of Hawaii’s ban (And yes those have been grown from the 2” specimens you find from Tahiti/Marshall/Line/Cook Islands).

there are exceptions but the average is around 3". My potters is touching 4" after 5 years and has been now in two 10 foot tanks. The average large size I received at My LFS is generally 2 1/4". If you look online at the major online sellers with a flame, theyre all around 2" size

This is mine at 3"

I routinely underestimate the size of my fish until I tape a strip of paper on the front glass of my tank. My male Flame Angel is about 3.5 inches. He is longer than the short size of a 3x5 card.

If it makes a difference, those are approx internal dimensions. External is more like 24 x 24 x 15. It was advertised to me as 40 gal, but could be wrong.
Internal dimension of 24x24x16 is 40 gal. OP tank cannot be much more than 30 gal, maybe a gallon or two more than 30
