Flame scallop

I’ve had a flame scallop for over a year that does great. Thing is I need to move it out of the 65 gallon it is in. The 180 has a few fish in there I think might kill it such as a copperband and Melanorus wrasse.

The flame scallop always has stayed in a cave so I assume it doesn’t need light? Can I place it in my sump?

Yeah they don't need light, they're not photosynthetic. I'm surprised it's lived for a year though. I read a thread recently on flame scallops and nobody has ever seen or heard of one live more than 6 months in captivity.

I've never had a scallop but if you think your sump has the conditions your scallop needs then go for it I guess since whatever you've been doing is working.

Well the sump is in my 180 gallon while the scallop has been living in my 65 aio. I tend to forget it’s even in there at times because I never see it in the open. The 65 became a BTA tank after my upgrade to the 180. Now that I think of it, that scallop has been in there for 2 years at least cause it was added pretty soon after the upgrade.

It’s a fairly neglected tank to be honest. (The 65 gallon) High nutrients and lots of algae and cyano. It’s been fishless for 9 weeks and I’m ready to do a reset on it starting with a copperband. Hoping it will develop a taste for all the aiptaisa it has also. The CBB in the 180 completely cleared up the aiptaisa so I’m hoping.

I haven't kept flame scallops for quite some time (a decade). My old notes are not always complete, but I do have records of keeping them for at least 18 months. When well fed with a quality dense phyto product (Reed/ Reef Nutrition), they do pretty well.

2 years in a tank like that is shocking. If I ever decide to buy a flame scallop, I'm turning to you for help no doubt. :face-with-tears-of-joy:

Just do the opposite of what you should do I guess :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing: No kidding it has been rough looking in the 65

I've kept flame scallops for several years but had to dose massive amounts of phyto to do so. In the end I decided it wasn't worth the trouble. Flame scallops are cool but not cool enough to make it worthwhile, at least for me.

I've never kept a flame scallop, but for a tricky invert like that, I wouldn't risk changing anything about its environment unless you know what you're doing.

How long did they last?

I got 5 flame scallops and 2 "electric" flame scallops in Mar 2022, and still have three of the regular flame scallops. The electric ones died I think in the first year. One of the regular ones died within a few months of getting them, and another died about a month ago.

So, I still have three flame scallops that are at least three years old, or at least I've had them for over three years. But I've been feeding them massive amounts of phyto and don't really want to do it anymore.
