Hello Fellow Reefers!

Im in the process of building my SPS tank and looking for some recommendations on flow pumps for my build. First off the details:

- 75 gallon CAD Lights
- 36L x 24W x 20H
- Bare bottom

This will be mostly SPS on top with some LPS/Zoas/Shrooms on the bottom. Not a whole lot but just a few pieces to add a little variety. So im wondering on pump selection....for a 36 wide tank, was contemplating on 2 -MP10's facing each other on each side and perhaps 1 more MP10 in the back. Would this be enough flow for a SPS dominant tank? Or perhaps run MP40's on the side and 1 MP10 in the back?

Also thought about running 1 gyre on 1 side and another pump facing the other side but not seeing many reefers running gyres now-a-days... any thoughts on gyres?

Lastly, was considering the Reef Octopus Octo Pulse + line. Do any of you guys have experience with these pumps?

Looks like flow/feature/price wise they are in the same ball park. Looking for helpful recommendations.

Thanks everyone!

I highly recommend 4x octopulse and 1x wave engine. The price/performance/features are excellent.

I switched from gyres to octopulse because of the maintenance. Ymmv if you are good at staying on top of your pumps.

Keep in mind the octos need a $300 wave engine. It was out of stock so I couldn't add it.

I personally think the value proposition of the vortechs is horrible.

Thanks for the input...actually the new new octo pulse plus controller has wi fi built in and can take 2 pumps on the same controller...https://www.coralvue.com/reef-octopus-octo-pulse-4-wave-pump

and you can add another pulse 4 pump by itself for only $220 : https://www.coralvue.com/reef-octopus-octo-pulse-4-pump-only

so out the door your looking at $600 for 2 octo 4 pumps with wi fi controller.

price wise thats why im looking at the octo pumps.

2 MP40s are basically the same price with wifi mobius app and well proven and you won't have cables inside your tank.

If you decide to get ecotech pumps, I'd suggest MP40 and running them at a lower setting over MP10s. You'll have more versatility in the long run as your flow requirements change as the corals grow

I would consider doing the wave engine as I personally think eventually for sps only you will want 4 pumps. Either all for flow or to have the flexibility to add smaller pump only options to sweep the bare bottom

If you do decide to go for 2 pumps, the octopulse setup you mentioned is much cheaper and more effective imo. It is not "basically the same price"

If you care a lot about cord in tank vs earmuff outside, then the decision is moot. Additionally if you see yourself buying extra vortech westside for maintenance the decision is moot but that makes the value proposition even worse.

I also see many many more RMA and reliability complaints about the vortechs. It is hard to find complaints about the octopulse. Keep in mind this is definitely very skewed by the fact the vortech are much more popular and thus will have more complaints.

Lastly, I personally feel hydros is a plus, while Mobius is a negative in the feature dept. If you want to integrate with an apex, the vortechs will be the better choice.

Great points...thats why i was thinking of adding a 3rd pump in the back to assist sweeping the floors. Originally, i was considering all 40's for the tank but was afraid it may be too much flow and stand out too much on a 36 wide tank. But for the sake upgrading to a bigger tank some day, i might as well just go with 2- 40's for now and see how it goes. I can always add a 3rd 40 later if needed.

Not so concerned about the cords on the inside of the tank so thats why im leaning more towards the octo 4's. Been reading good reviews on them.

I think im gonna hold off on a apex for now till i upgrade to a bigger tank. When i do, ill probably go with the new Hydros x10 with kraken power source. Now that the x10 comes with salinity port and the kraken is a single source power supply...that set up looks awesome...
