Flower pot coral not opening?

is this guy a goner? Part of it died off when I first got it, but it still opened up.
 
These corals are weird. They're pretty well-known for dying. Mine died after a year with little to no growth. No idea why.
 
I had one on bottom of my tank for 2 years. I sold it durning a tank Tare down. I kept it on sand. Did great. Here is a pick of it when I first got it
