I noticed reference to the Fluval Surface Skimmer in another thread. I bought my son a 12 gallon Cube Masters aquarium to get him started in reef keeping. It has a small overflow in the back, three chambers for filter pads and carbon and then the water is pumped back into the aquarium. Even though the overflow is in the top corner, the surface still develops a surface slick. Does the surface skimmer work OK without using a separate filter? It looks like the skimmer just lets the powerhead pull the surface layer through and mix it back into the water.
Thanks
Scott

i've used those surface skimmers before when hooked up to an AC110 HOB fuge/filter.

they work "ok". once they get coraline built up on them is another story though b/c they stick, and bob up and down gulping air. that can become a real PITA.

so make sure to put it somewhere you can easily get it out to clean it up.
