I’m used to this because I’ve had my in-wall 90 gallon for 5 years but with an internal corner overflow. I’m upgrading to a 260.

I’m wondering if having an external box might be too much in the way. I really want to keep as much of the overflow out of the tank as possible.

Anyone have access only to the back and have an external overflow? How is maintenance?

How about doing the external overflow on the end of the tank rather than the back?

There is exactly 4 inches between the wall and where the tank will be on the side that is hidden in the wall. Is 4 inches enough?

The front and right side will be viewable from front.

It should be, most overflows fall within that range, it will be a bit of a pain in the neck installing it but should fit. Once again this depends on what overflow you've decided to go with I'm not sure if you have settled on a particular one just yet.:)

I will also add I've noticed you've used what looks like regular drywall on the top face of the opening in the wall and on the inside walls. I would suggest replacing this with cement or fiberglass board. Preferably fiberglass due to the moisture and salt it will be exposed to. You can still coat both these materials with 90 (not sure if its available in the states but we use sheetrock 90 here in canada for such applications). Rather than regular drywall mud.

I’m going to coat it with Red Guard and paint on top of that.

Interesting I wasn't aware that regular paint would stick to Red gard as it's a flexible membrane coating. Anyway didn't mean to derail your thread I was just curious.
