Hey guys!
I just recently set up a 53-gallon tank and migrated from a 20-gallon tank!

Decided to start a build thread for it here.

It’s gonna be a mixed reef, mostly SPS with a few LPS corals thrown in.

Hi, nice aquascape, do you plan adding more light?
Thanks!! Yes I do.
I’m gonna stick with one light for now until I get some more corals in there!
It feels like that’s gonna take a while, but once the tank fills up a bit more, I’m thinking of adding another Orphek Natura iCon or maybe an OR4 iCon Reef Day Plus.

The first thing I had to do was clear out my 60cm (20gal) tank.
Once that was out of the way, I got the frame, tank, and sump set up.

Main tank (53gal)
900 × 450 × 500

I already had a pretty clear vision of how I wanted it to look. I’m thinking about adding a sub-tank on the side sometime soon, too.

What will be in the sub tank?

Interested to seeing your build using Japanese reef equipment and methods. Any idea why Japanese tanks use pipe within pipe overflows vs western box overflows?
Thanks! That means a lot!

I think the reason why pipe-within-pipe overflows are still the go-to in Japan is just that they’re cheaper and there’s way more gear available for them.
Plus, for the longest time, REEFER was pretty much the only real choice if you wanted a box-style tank.
But lately, some more affordable western-style box options have finally hit the market, so I feel like the tide is definitely starting to turn!
