Ok ladies and gentlemen, I got a FX6 canister, and from what I can tell, a protein skimmer and a media reactor, as well as a sump and a return pump from my LFS for free. I have a 75 ga freshwater tank I plan on using the fx6 for. As for everything else, right now I have a 45 ga FOWLR tank that I’d like to turn into a mini reef tank. It’s not drilled so I’ll need a HOB overflow. My main reason for posting is, to make sure my guess on what the equipment that I have is correct and also to ask if I need the reactor. I have a huge clump of Chaeto that I can put in the sump for nutrient removal or is the reactor a lot more efficient. Also what I think is the protein skimmer is torn down right now cause I’m giving everything a deep clean

Congratulations on the new adventure! No you don't need the reactor. Citric acid is a good way to clean the protein skimmer. Fully submerge the skimmer in a solution of citric acid and add a powerhead for circulation and it should be fully clean in a short period of time. Good luck with whatever direction that you go!
