Skinz78 or anyone else that knows, are the clams pacific east aquaculture listed yesterday tahitians? They are labeled as "ultra maximas" but it doesnt say where they are from and also says they are the exclusive importers. Look just as pretty as french polys so thats why im thinking about getting one but if they are french then im.deifnitely not getting one!

Yes they are.

I bought a Super Grade French Polynesian clam from Dr. Mac about 4 months ago. The clam started doing badly about a week or so ago. I have since spot fed dried phytoplankton once daily, and I can tell the clam is on the rebound.

Not sure that lighting is an issue.

lol I just see people saying my parameters are 0... no clue why it died?
with a filter feeder if your parameters are 0 its obviously not going to do good there is no food for it.

I couldnt tell you what my parameters are ive never checked ;)

They are the Maxima's that are being sold currently that are generally big and range from 4" to 7". They are usually blue but I have seen some really wild patterns with them. They are great looking clams for sure.

Mine both died unexpectedly too, no signs of stress from fish or inverts.

Mine died the same way last night.

Mine both lasted about 3 to 4 months.

I'm starting to think the same thing. Which is totally weird to me because you would think the larger Maxima's would have a greater survivability rate.

Actually, it's the 4"to 5" that does better. 7" ones have a tough time during shipping.

I have 1 that has looked like crap for about a month, with intermittent pinched mantle. Really don't understand what's going on with it. Got it from Pacific East (Dr. Mac's). Really pretty clam measuring about 5". Crappy thing is that my other clam from there (a 2" guy that I've had for about a year), also started looking bad.

Water parameters check out; no pests; no changes in position. Still haven't lost them but they definitely don't look good.

Watch you Alk. My experience is Alk swings or lower Alk will stress the T Clam

I notice a lot of people are placing these maximas on the sand bed.....deepest part of the tank and farthest from the light source. Is there any connection that the people that are successful are punching them with strong light and close to it like up high on the rock work? These are some big clams that maybe demand more for its metabolic needs.

They love light and are use to high par values.
So keeping them on the sand in time will starve them

Who has kept one of these clams the longest? Where is the placement, lighting, and how is the flow?

High lighting for sure. But ease into it. Anything over 600 par keep it to just 8 hour cycling time.
I have had them in strong flow to very little flow.. Both did very well.

Just got off the phone with a local fish store owner/friend. His Tahitian has been thriving for almost 1.5 years. He has his tank at 67 degrees and has a "dirty tank" with lots of dosing involved.

Reviving an old thread. My aquacultured French Polynesian clam from Dr Mac has been with me now going on 4 months. I have tried a couple of ultra Maxima's from various vendors and even an ORA squamosa from divers den, none of whom made it. My water is dirty, and tested high for DOC.

My two small cultured clams from pacific east are still doing well with a little bit of growth. Going on 7 months or so now.

Just grow it: Have you ever added CO2 to your reef tank?
