Getting fish without a lid

Temporary fix (Home Depo/Lowes); cuts to size with a pair of sharp wire snips. Put one piece on top of the other slightly off-set, to make the holes in the grate even smaller. When your lid comes, this stuff is still good to have on hand-- such as to put inside a tank to divide one fish off from the others, and other temporary uses. Best wishes
I really like this idea -thank you so much! With some thought I will probably get some mesh to sit on top of the aquarium whilst I wait for the lid to arrive so I can get some fish sooner + stress free!

good idea. or deer netting then wrap your trees and shrubs with the rest.

So I have a custom lid on the way for my max nano, but it might not arrive for another 3 weeks.

So I wondered - is it a bad idea to get a couple of clownfish with the bare top?

I know the tanks come without a lid for aesthetic purposes so someone out there must have success without a lid but just wanted to hear some thoughts on this or if it’s not worth the risk…

Thank you!
I would be careful i had a new clown jump through a relatively large net when i too was waiting for a lid, they are known jumpers, if your worried about gas exchange buy a fine net or it shouldn’t be an issue having it sealed if you have a skimmer, i even put cling film over when going a way for a while and thats fine with my skimmer

I had a jawfish that jumped, but nothing else. With that being said, I wouldn't risk it. If you really want to get fish now, get a temporary lid until your permanent one arrives.

I don’t have a lid. I’ve had one male clown and a chromis jump in the last year. The chromis jumped because it went for the food too fast. I put it back in with no problems. The clown was strange, always at the top of the tank at night. One morning it was dried up on the floor. Nothing else though.

A friend of mine had a clown jump out last week and died. I know probability may be low with clowns but it can still happen

Definitely not recommending anyone do this but I was tired of seeing my screen projected on my substrate so for the past 7 years I've gone without a screen top and haven't had any misfortune. Despite that, luck doesn't last forever and I imagine i'll throw it back on sooner than later.

I think it boils down to, there are low-probability jumpers and high probability jumpers, but 'any fish is capable of jumping at any time.' 😎

Sorry glad you did not. If a pair one will continuously bully and chase the other into submission . One was in my overflow twice then on floor . The second committed suicide
