I got some jf acid reflux, cb blone hair blue eyes girls, and blue agaves coming Tuesday. And picked up 11 polyps of utter chaos from John at aqua hut the other day. They look super nice. Can't get a good pic with my phone though. LOL IMG_20151111_194658106.jpg

@Devlin I decided to come here cause I didn't wanna run away with their thread. I ain't been working since the last job. It's holidays and hard to come by, so I haven't been doing much with myself.
I been working with a friend for cash. Finished a job 2 weeks ago and it is hell finding a job at the end of the year. That's why I like working maintenance. First time I've been laid off for the holidays in 10 years.

I know what you mean, the only job going on right now is CF industries and something at Dow Plaquemines. I think ISC and cajun had that Dow job. Not completely sure though.

You said you had some corals not doing well? Salt mixes.

My birds nest died and my Grinch Monti looks in bad shape. I did a water change today. Doing another next week. Hopefully the Monti comes back. My jf jack o lanter was just starting to grow good. I hope everything bounces back. High alk

how big is your tank? so long as you can match temp and salinity you can swap all of the water or however much as you want to bring the levels to a stable level.

yeah bud, that's beautiful. but if youre having issues with parameters you can drain as much water as you want so long as you can replace it with temp and salinity matched water. your corals will be fine exposed to the air for a few minutes. change out as much water as you need to in order to stabilize your parameters.

I was thinking that if I end renting a small place or something, and I have to get a small tank(55 gallons or less), I will get a canister filter. You can put anything you want in there. One tray can be rock rubble, another chemipure blue, and anything else. Maybe ceramic rings too. A sump is just open, a canister filter is just enclosed. I would only just a hang on back skimmer and refugium. I would save money by just getting a 55 gallon aquarium from Walmart ($170).
Twilliard said he used a canister filter for a long time before he decided to go with a large skimmer.
You never what you'll end up with though.

actually theres a big difference between a sump and a canister filter. and in a reef, a canister filter will do nothing more than create more maintenance. canister filters are great devices for most tanks and can buff the water better than anything else. but they also trap so much crud that you have to pull them apart too often for them to be worth it. whereas most people clean their sump a couple times a year, some people never clean their sump.

I sure I would clean it regularly, just like your bowl. But that's fine with me. Alot of people seem to want to set up tanks to set it and forget it, but life just ain't that easy.
And the way I think is the more people hate on something, the more I wanna do it. Allot of people in this hobby think hob filters or canister filters will cause locusts or something.
I have read several people who have used canister filters and did well. All it is is an enclosed filter system. And I like the piece of mind of not having floods in my home.
People never cleaning their tanks or filters sounds lazy.
Also, for people who use like crushed coral or large grain substrate can use an undergravel filter. Maybe they should reverse flow or something, but that crushed coral has alot of surface area for bacteria to grow on.

lol that's my facebook group. yeah, lots of people run them successfully. ive ran a reef successfully with no mechanical filtration. the issue is, the more often you have to disturb your tank more often you destabilize the tank. its kinda give and take.

I would have to change the chemipure blue anyway.
Always seems to be that fine line no matter what. Idk.

in all honesty though, ive had more messes from a canister than I have a sump... ive never spilled a drop out of my sump, but I had 2 different canisters leak.
