I just started getting some GHA on my tank. I tested about 5-10ppm nitrates and 0.08 phosphates. is that enough to spur algae growth? i mean i thought these numbers would be low enough to prevent them from starting lo. i guess not?

No...but those are good numbers. Too low and risk you other organisms out competing algae - like dino's - trust me...GHA is your friend compared to those. A little GHA is just your tank saying it's balanced in your favor....for now.

dang i really thought if numbers were low enough i could prevent most algae .while keeping my corals happy. Guess there's really no such thing as an algae free tank without risk of dinos/cyano.

Oh I think after a long maturing process (at least several months) you can have enough coral growth and micro fauna to almost eliminate most "visible" algae. But algae is always going to be present.

Just grow it: Have you ever added CO2 to your reef tank?
