glass stress failure

Does anyone know how to test aquarium glass for internal stress? I had a glass aquarium failure that occurred in the middle of the night due to what I think was stress. I cleaned the glass that evening so I would have noticed a crack.

I believe there is a way to visualize the stress in glass using polarized light filters. Sorry I don't remember more, but you might find something if you search for that.
