Hello everyone,

I have had a small colony of glove polyps for a few months now and they have suddenly gone into quite a long streak of staying closed up pretty much permanently. They have shrank incredibly and I’m not sure as to what to do. I haven’t changed anything in the system and every else seems to be thriving. I did try moving them to see if they didn’t like the flow but later realized they had been in the same position for months already with no issue. I feel like it is important to note that I had a white Xenia do the same thing at the same exact time that I handed over to my girlfriend a few days ago to see if she could sort it out. I had been target feeding them twice weekly with reef roids and dosing the system with seachem reef plus as well. I will post my water parameters later I have them wrote down and don’t know what I did with it. In the meantime, here are some before and after photos. Thank you for any input.

Your relatively closeup shots reveal a rather new/sterile tank. A mature tank, echo system is an amazing thing. But it’s really “a thing “! Some corals are more adaptive in certain tanks.

I agree. Also, That plug it’s on looks to be pretty barren compared to the earlier pics.

Got a FTS?

I upgraded this system from a 20 to a 55. The original system was running rampant with coralline algae and I moved some of the original live rock over from that setup. I added new dry rock to fill in the extra space which is what I have this plug sitting on. It does seem as though you are correct with the plug looking barren. I have scrubbed away some green hair algae from it with my thumb to keep it from overtaking the coral while I get a better cleanup crew added to the system but I do not believe that is what happened to make it appear this way. I did not reuse the sand in the old tank and put a new live sand bed in place and allowed it to cycle with some of the original live rock for about 3 weeks before slowly moving in my livestock a little at a time. I have had the 55 in place and running for around 6 months but I had the 20 running for almost two years. The parameters are as follows.

specific gravity: 1.025
PH: 8
PO4: 0.25
NO3: 0
NO2: 0.5
dKH: 6
CA: 500

I don’t believe the phosphates are truly that high because my test kit does not read to extremely fine levels. The color that showed was between 0.25 and 0 so I rounded it to 0.25. Everything else should be accurate. I do see some issues here but I would like to hear your assessment on it.

Update: I have seen some slight improvement. It seems they may be attempting to revive but I don’t have my hopes too high yet. They’ve opened up quite a bit more since I moved them.

Another update: The polyps have closed up again since my last post. They look pretty much the same as they did in the picture I provided.

Just grow it: Have you ever added CO2 to your reef tank?
