Hey guys. Need some help. Someone in my family sent me a gold rim tang and a powder blue tang from reef pro store. Super nice gesture of them but they dont know really anything about the hobby and Im currently battling ich my DT….

No fish are actively infected but new ones develop ich. So Ive been setting up and cycling two different QT tanks to do a fallow period. Neither are ready for fish yet since Im doing a full cycle just to be sure the bioloads wont be overloaded when I move the fish between the two tanks.

Anyway, these two fish came today to my surprise. Also come to find out the shipment was delayed and in transit two days. Ive put the two fish in my biocube for the moment as I dont have anywhere else to put them with all the stuff is going on.

The gold rim was at the top of the bag struggling to breathe and the water not clear. Powder blue was fine. So I acclimated them with a drip and put them in the tank. Gold rim is still swimming weird and at the top of the tank. All other fish including the powder blue are fine. I have a lot of circulation in the biocube and a huge airstone I run on this tank all the time.

Any help would be appreciated. The dots on the fish are bubbles. Also none of the LFS stores near me will take them, both are adamant on not taking any of the powder tangs due to their aggression.

Did you drip right into the shipping bag and water? This can cause a toxic ammonia spike to happen.

It could be ammonia burn from sitting in the bags that long. And you don't need to necessarily cycle if you're making QT water. Fresh, clean saltwater is the best right now and have a small pump to move the water in the QT for now I think is best.

Also QT tank has no nutrients at all, just fresh mixed saltwater and some rock

Fish needs clean(ish) water and thats it. You should be fine. Is the rock from your tank? Might want to take it out if/when you are dosing meds

I think the op is doing hyposalinity?
I was going to but I have too much algae in the DT. So I was going to do hypo in QT but was going to wait for the fish to get settled before starting to drop it in QT.

Ah okay I see. Is it not possible to have him settle down in the QT tank directly instead? Assuming salinity is about the same with your tank since you haven’t started hyposalinity yet.

Acclimation is important but also depending on shipping time, will need to further adjust. Utilize air stone and leave light intensity low for tonight. Consider coppersafe quarantine as long as they are isolated and especially since you have issues in other tanks currently. Swimming at top of tank suggest low oxygen but can be insufficient acclimation, salinity issue or ph imbalance

I did move him to QT and have extra air stones. Checked ph, that was 8.2

The goldrim seems to be suffering from positive buoyancy - the way it is struggling to maintain position by swimming head down. That is sometimes seen in fish that were recently shipped by air - the lower pressure during the flight can cause them to float. I'd give it a day to recover and then assess it again.....this isn't a really treatable problem.
