Because 40 is the minimum you would want in order to keep 1-2 and grow them out to a decent size - hence why I said 20-30 for a small goldfish (goldfish can basically get anywhere from 8-12 inches with proper care, so the bigger the tank the better).Trying to figure outbwhy when ive googled says 40g aquarium-

I've been keeping goldfish for a while now, and trust me, tank size really matters. For just one goldfish, you want at least a 20-gallon tank. If you get more, add about 10 gallons for each one. Goldfish get pretty big, so they need a lot of space to swim around. Also, they produce a lot of waste, so a good filter is super important to keep the water clean. And by the way, if you're wondering How Long Do Goldfish Live?, they can live a really long time if you take care of them well—sometimes even for 20 years or more!I know not saltwater, but any ideas tank size
