The recommendations I’ve seen say 20-30 gallons minimum for 1 small goldfish, 40-50+ is recommended for keeping two or more (I’ve also seen it recommended to keep multiple goldfish). A general rule of thumb is to start with 30-40 gallons and add 10 gallons for every goldfish beyond the first.

That said, a longer tank is preferred to a taller tank, and regular (comet) goldfish will need a longer tank than fancy goldfish (comets swim faster and tend to grow longer than fancy goldfish).

There are different varieties that have different size requirement. Generally speaking, the multi-tailfin goldfish stay on the small size, while single tail fin (again generally speaking) grow large. The common goldfish will grow to a foot and a half. I had three goldfish (A wakin, a comet and a fantail) in a 75 gallon that lived for around 25 years. I don't know this as a fact, but believed the wakin and comet stayed at about 8 inches because of the smaller tank size.

Because 40 is the minimum you would want in order to keep 1-2 and grow them out to a decent size - hence why I said 20-30 for a small goldfish (goldfish can basically get anywhere from 8-12 inches with proper care, so the bigger the tank the better).

As mentioned above, basically the bigger the tank and more frequent the water changes, the bigger the goldfish get.

i cant think

As a general rule, they get big…
My boy was a good 6-7” before he died and he only lived maybe 7-8 years. This guy was a Common Goldfish you get in Funfair.
I don’t think I have photos of him but they definitely want 40G tanks if you’re going for a smaller goldfish like a butterfly.

I have my goldfish in a pond outside that is about 300 gallon. I don't really consider them to be inside fish. They get big and they breed and then there are at least 20 goldfish...

I know not saltwater, but any ideas tank size
for goldfish
depends on type. Regular and shibunkin need at least 55-75g minimum while fantail/bubble eye need 55g long term. Your goldfish you win at a fair and reach an easy Foot or more

I've been keeping goldfish for a while now, and trust me, tank size really matters. For just one goldfish, you want at least a 20-gallon tank. If you get more, add about 10 gallons for each one. Goldfish get pretty big, so they need a lot of space to swim around. Also, they produce a lot of waste, so a good filter is super important to keep the water clean. And by the way, if you're wondering How Long Do Goldfish Live?, they can live a really long time if you take care of them well—sometimes even for 20 years or more!

Old thread but I disagree with the 20 gallon. My childhood goldfish was in a 60 gallon and that was perfect for him. He live to be 17.
